What Operating Systems Do

• Depends on the point of view


• Users want convenience, ease of use and good performance
– Don’t care about resource utilization
• But shared computer such as mainframe or minicomputer must
keep all users happy
• Users of dedicate systems such as workstations have dedicated
resources but frequently use shared resources from servers
• Handheld computers are resource poor, optimized for usability and
battery life
• Some computers have little or no user interface, such as embedded
computers in devices and automobiles

• OS is a resource allocator
– Manages all resources

Bootstrap Program
• A bootstrap program is the first code that is executed when the computer
system is started. The entire operating system depends on the bootstrap
program to work correctly as it loads the operating system.
• A figure that demonstrates the use of the bootstrap program is as follows −

• The bootstrap program is a part of ROM which is the non-volatile memory.
The operating system is loaded into the RAM by the bootstrap program
after the start of the computer system. Then the operating system starts the
device drivers.
• A device driver is a piece of software that enables communication between
an operating system or application and hardware or peripheral devices. It
serves as a bridge between the different components of a computer,
allowing them to interact with each other.

Computer-System Operation
• The I/O devices and the CPU both execute concurrently. Some
of the processes are scheduled for the CPU and at the same
time, some are undergoing input/output operations.
• There are multiple device controllers, each in charge of a
particular device such as keyboard, mouse, printer etc.
• There is buffer available for each of the devices. The input and
output data can be stored in these buffers.
• The data is moved from memory to the respective device
buffers by the CPU for I/O operations and then this data is
moved back from the buffers to memory.

• A device controller is a system that handles the incoming and
outgoing signals of the CPU by acting as a bridge between
CPU and the I/O devices. A device is connected to the
computer via a plug and socket, and the socket is connected to
a device controller. Device controllers use binary and digital
codes.
• Each device controller has a local buffer.
• CPU moves data from/to main memory to/from local buffers
• Device controller informs CPU that it has finished its
operation by causing an interrupt.

• Once the kernel is loaded and executing, it can start providing
services to the system and its users.
• On UNIX, the first system process is init and it starts many
other daemons.
• Once this phase is complete, the system is fully booted, and
the system waits for some event to occur.

Interrupts
• An interrupt is a necessary part of Computer System Organization as it is
triggered by hardware and software parts when they need immediate
attention.
• An interrupt can be generated by a device or a program to inform the
operating system to halt its current activities and focus on something
else. The types of interrupts are:

• An interrupt is a signal emitted by a device attached to a
computer or from a program within the computer. It
requires the operating system (OS) to stop and figure out
what to do next.

• Hardware and software interrupts are two types of interrupts.
Hardware interrupts are triggered by hardware peripherals
while software interrupts are triggered by software function
calls.
• There are two types of interrupts:
• • Hardware ‐‐ a device may trigger an interrupt by sending a signal to the
CPU, usually by way of the system bus.
• • Software ‐‐ a program may trigger an interrupt by executing a special
operation called a system call.
• • A software‐generated interrupt (sometimes called trap or exception) is
caused either by an error (e.g., divide by zero) or a user request (e.g., an
I/O request).
• • An operating system is interrupt driven.

• Examples of software interruptions
• Types of software interrupts

These are commands that let software ask the operating system to do
something. For example, when a program wants to read a file, it can
issue a system call interrupt.
• Exception handling. An exception interrupt happens when a program
encounters an error like division by zero.
• A hardware interrupt is an electronic signal from an external hardware
device that indicates it needs attention from the OS. One example of this
is moving a mouse or pressing a keyboard key. In these examples of
interrupts, the processor must stop to read the mouse position or keystroke
at that instant.

Common Functions of Interrupts
• When an interrupt occurs, the operating system preserves the
state of the CPU by storing the registers and the program
counter.
• Determines which type of interrupt has occurred and
transfers control to the interrupt‐service routine.
• An interrupt‐service routine is a collection of routines
(modules), each of which is responsible for handling one
particular interrupt (e.g., from a printer, from a disk)
• The transfer is through the interrupt vector, which contains
the addresses of all the service routines.
• Interrupt architecture must save the address of the interrupted
instruction.

Interrupt Handling
• The operating system preserves the state of the CPU by storing it in
registers and the program counter.
• Determines which type of interrupt has occurred:
– polling
– vectored interrupt system
• Separate segments of code determine what action should be taken for
each type of interrupt.
• Polling involves continually checking the status of a device, while
interrupts allow devices to signal when an event needs immediate
attention.
• vectored interrupt is a processing technique in which the interrupting
device directs the processor to the appropriate interrupt service
routine.

• Instruction cycle consists of fetch, execute and interrupt stage show in
below diagram −

• If any interrupt occurs, it is indicated by an interrupt flag. The CPU will go


to interrupt handler routine. Interrupt handler then checks the type of
interrupt and executes the appropriate function.
• Interrupt handler activates most prior able activity first and later deferrable
part will be handled.

I/O Structure
• I/O Structure consists of Programmed I/O, Interrupt driven I/O, DMA,
CPU, Memory, External devices, these are all connected with the help of
Peripheral I/O Buses and General I/O Buses.
1. Programmed I/O

• In the programmed I/O when we write the input then the device should be
ready to take the data otherwise the program should wait for some time so
that the device or buffer will be free then it can take the input.
• Once the input is taken then it will be checked whether the output device or
output buffer is free then it will be printed. This process is continued every
time in transferring of the data.

2. I/O Interrupts

•To initiate any I / O operation, the CPU first loads the registers to the device
controller. Then the device controller checks the contents of the registers
to determine what operation to perform.
•There are two possibilities if I / O operations want to be executed. These are as
follows −
•Synchronous I / O − The control is returned to the user process after the I/O
process is completed.
•Asynchronous I/O − The control is returned to the user process without
waiting for the I/O process to finish. Here, I/O process and the user process run
simultaneously.

3. DMA Structure

•Direct Memory Access (DMA) is a method of handling I / O. Here the device


controller directly communicates with memory without CPU involvement.
•After setting the resources of I/O devices like buffers, pointers, and counters,
the device controller transfers blocks of data directly to storage without CPU
intervention.
•DMA is generally used for high speed I / O devices.

– Wait instruction idles the CPU until the next interrupt

– At most one I/O request is outstanding at a time, no simultaneous

– Device-status table contains entry for each I/O device indicating
its type, address, and state
– OS indexes into I/O device table to determine device status and

Storage Definitions and Notation Review
The basic unit of computer storage is the bit. A bit can contain one of two
values, 0 and 1. All other storage in a computer is based on collections of bits.
Given enough bits, it is amazing how many things a computer can represent:
numbers, letters, images, movies, sounds, documents, and programs, to name
a few. A byte is 8 bits, and on most computers it is the smallest convenient
chunk of storage. For example, most computers don’t have an instruction to
move a bit but do have one to move a byte. A less common term is word,
which is a given computer architecture’s native unit of data. A word is made up
of one or more bytes. For example, a computer that has 64-bit registers and
64-bit memory addressing typically has 64-bit (8-byte) words. A computer
executes many operations in its native word size rather than a byte at a time.

Computer storage, along with most computer throughput, is generally measured


and manipulated in bytes and collections of bytes.
A kilobyte, or KB, is 1,024 bytes
a megabyte, or MB, is 1,0242 bytes
a gigabyte, or GB, is 1,0243 bytes
a terabyte, or TB, is 1,0244 bytes
a petabyte, or PB, is 1,0245 bytes

Computer manufacturers often round off these numbers and say that a
megabyte is 1 million bytes and a gigabyte is 1 billion bytes. Networking
measurements are an exception to this general rule; they are given in bits
(because networks move data a bit at a time).

– The disk controller determines the logical interaction between the
device and the computer
• Solid-state disks – faster than hard disks, nonvolatile

• Most systems use a single general-purpose processor
– Most systems have special-purpose processors as well
• Multiprocessors systems growing in use and
importance
– Also known as parallel systems, tightly-coupled systems
– Advantages include:
1. Increased throughput

3. Increased reliability – graceful degradation or fault tolerance
– Two types:
1. Asymmetric Multiprocessing – each processor is assigned a
specific task.

• Multiprogramming (Batch system) needed for efficiency
– Single user cannot keep CPU and I/O devices busy at all times
– Multiprogramming organizes jobs (code and data) so CPU always has
one to execute
– A subset of total jobs in system is kept in memory
– One job selected and run via job scheduling
– When it has to wait (for I/O for example), OS switches to another job
• Timesharing (multitasking) is logical extension in which CPU switches
jobs so frequently that users can interact with each job while it is running,
creating interactive computing
– Response time should be < 1 second
– Each user has at least one program executing in memory process
– If several jobs ready to run at the same time CPU scheduling
– If processes don’t fit in memory, swapping moves them in and out to
run

– Initialization data
• Process termination requires reclaim of any reusable resources
• Single-threaded process has one program counter specifying
location of next instruction to execute
– Process executes instructions sequentially, one at a time, until
completion
• Multi-threaded process has one program counter per thread
• Typically system has many processes, some user, some operating
system running concurrently on one or more CPUs
