Chapter 1
THE PROBLEM AND IT’S BACKGROUND
Introduction
After Mandarin Chinese and Spanish, English is the third most widely spoken
language in the world. It is qualified and spoken in more than 118 nations and is
frequently referred to as the diplomatic or international language. Potter, S. and Crystal
D. The Indo-European language of the West Germanic language family is English
Many people consider modern English to be the universal language and it is
used as the standard in many other domains, such as computer programming,
international trade, and higher education.
Learning a foreign language might be difficult because it involves a lot of mental
exercises, but it can also help pupils become more analytical and cognitively strong. A
2012 study conducted in Switzerland found that learning a new language can improve
students' creativity by changing the way the brain is organized, specifically affecting the
areas of the brain that control memory and conscious cognition
Over time, bilingualism can enhance focus and memory while maintaining
cognitive function well into old life. Additionally, it will improve the personalities and self-
worth of the students. In other words, the brain gets tougher and more expansive when
learning a new language. Considering that English is the language spoken by everyone.
People who live in a multicultural country like the United Arab Emirates must speak
English in order to interact with others in a variety of social settings. This has increased
the significance of studying English and brought attention to the role that teachers play
in helping students acquire procedural knowledge as opposed to language rules
(Canagarajah, 2014). Furthermore, as many international students find it difficult to
adjust to their new lifestyle and integrate into the local culture, speaking English fluently
also has a negative impact on students' self-esteem (Banjong, 2015). Students who
have low self-esteem may experience emotional and academic setbacks as well.
These days, with financial problem and educational advancements, some kids
are unfortunate enough to reach the required goal. They view the language barrier as a
hurdle that will hinder them, particularly when it comes to establishing their credibility
and getting good grades in academic settings. They may experience a variety of issues,
such as trouble comprehending material, particularly scientific material, since they are
unfamiliar with several words and ideas. They will grow weary of having to look up every
difficult term they come across, which will either depress them or motivate them to put in
even more effort. If there is a barrier, these students' grades will gradually go down. As
a result, they may find it difficult to interact with others and their self-esteem may remain
quite low. Because of this, speaking English fluently might be as simple for some people
as breathing, while it is a nightmare for others. When it comes to English language
competency, non-native speakers who began their education early tend to be more
proficient than those who began later in life. Pupils who began at a very young age
typically have very high English language competency, on par with pupils who speak
English as their first language. You sent Speaking fluency is also an important
component of communication competence, because the ability of speaking fluently can
help the speaker to produce continuous speech without comprehension difficulties for
the listener and to maintain the communicative ideas more effectively.
