PROJECT REPORT
Introduction to OTT
OTT platform means - over-the-top platform, which provides
content related to video or other digital media through the Internet.
The OTT platform is a platform that allows you to watch movies and
television shows over the Internet rather than through cable or
satellite. It offers a variety of genres of online content. You can pay
for the type of content you want to watch on OTT platforms. OTT
platform originated in America, and it gradually came to India, but
now its demand is increasing very quickly.
It is mainly used for video on demand platforms, audio
streaming, OTT devices, VoiceIP calls, and communication
channel messaging etc.
Amazon Prime Video, Netflix and Disney+ Hotstar are among the
most popular. Since the outbreak of COVID-19, all platforms have
seen a rise in subscription rates.
1. RISE OF OTT PLATFORMS
Films have been bearing the burden of theatres that have partially
opened and then shut due to the second wave for months. With
shootings and movie premieres, the only silver lining is the surge in
popularity of over-the-top (OTT) content. With the recent government
shutdowns and the present status of the economy, OTT appears to
be the new normal in the entertainment industry.
In India, the OTT business is only about four years old. Netflix was
the first OTT platform to launch, followed by Amazon Prime Video
and more than 40 others. The first company to commission Indian
originals was Amazon. Following that, Netflix delved into the realm
of local content.
Amazon Prime Video has around 17 million paying customers,
second only to Disney+ Hotstar (18 million), with Netflix India having
five million and Zee5 having 11 million or more. It made watching
movies more easy, available, and economical for a broader range of
users. Anyone with a phone having an Internet connection can
watch a movie from anywhere on the globe.
The Indian OTT market is anticipated to reach Rs 237.86 billion
(US$3.22 billion) by FY25, up from Rs 42.50 billion (US$576.73
million) in FY19, according to a report.
By FY23, India will have 500 million or more online video users,
which will rise as smartphone and internet penetration increase.
According to another survey, tier-two, three, and four towns used
OTT services more than metros and tier-one cities during the
pandemic.
2. Types of OTT Platforms Services
There are 3 types of services of OTT platform, the information of which is
as follows:-
2.1 Transactional Video on Demand (TVOD) :
This TVOD service of OTT platform provides the service in which if
the customers want to watch any of their favorite television show or
movie once, then through this they can watch it on rent, or it Can
also be purchased. For example Apple iTunes etc.
2.2 Subscription Video on Demand (SVOD):
If customers want to watch video streaming content then they have
to subscribe for it, and they need to pay something for the
subscription. There are many platforms in which customers can
watch original content. For example Netflix, Amazon Prime etc.
2.3 Advertising Video on Demand (AVOD):
Ads are present in this OTT service. In this, customers can
watch content for free, but along with watching this content,
they also have to watch ADS in between the movie or series.
3. PROS OF OTT PLATFORMS
We can watch the content whenever we want to. OTT platforms provide flexibility
and convenience.
Some people, who live in remote areas do not have theatres
nearby. And for some others, going to theatres is difficult due to
disability or restrictions. OTT platforms are inclusive and enable
everyone to watch the content from home.
For binge-watchers, OTT platforms are cost-effective. As there
is no need to pay for each and every movie, people can watch
plenty of movies and other content for just a subscription price.
Sometimes, makers of small movies struggle to release their movies
in theatres. Moreover, they do not afford to spend so much money on
promoting the movie. when there are no famous stars in the movie,
it’s a bit difficult to bring the audience to the theatres. For them, OTT
platforms are a boon. They can
reach a wider audience.
OTT platforms are making original movies, which are getting
applause for the quality content. This is forcing regular movie
makers to think differently and to make quality content.
NRIs (Non-resident Indians) can now easily watch Indian
movies due to the proliferation of OTT platforms.
As OTT platforms are providing subtitles for many movies, we can watch movies
of other languages too.
This facility is giving us a wide variety of content choices.
4. CONS OF OTT PLATFORMS
People with poor internet connections will not be able to enjoy a
smooth viewing experience. Access to the Internet is also required
because the materials are only available online.
Security and privacy are the two most pressing problems for OTT
platforms. The information saved on their platform should not be
exploited for illicit reasons, either during sign-in or in their search
history.
Another issue with OTT services is the lack of censorship.
Therefore, people of all ages are exposed to a wide range of
content.
People might quickly become addicted to OTT platforms due to the
wide range of content offered, resulting in a limited social life.
The growth of OTT platforms is a threat to many jobs in theatres.
Even though OTT platforms are creating plenty of new jobs, they are
skilled jobs. Moreover, Theatre owners have spent crores of rupees
in building infrastructure. But now, due to OTT platforms, they are
not getting enough returns for their investment.
Not everyone has smart TV or smartphone yet. Moreover, to watch
and experience 3D and 4D movies, many people have to go to
theatres. So, OTT platforms cannot completely replace theatres.
For people who watch movies occasionally, OTT platforms are expensive.
In general, Indian films make huge profits by releasing movies in
US and European countries. But with releasing movies on OTT
platforms, they are losing one of the main revenue sources.
5. Conclusion
OTT platforms have a great future. The popularity and utilization of
OTT platforms will only grow when 5G services are launched.
Because India is such a large market for OTT platforms, the only way
to ensure faster absorption and growth is to offer various plans to
cater to a diversified user base with varying income levels. OTT
platform development has been incredible so far, owing to the
convenience and great shows/movies OTT provides. They are loved
by people because they deliver unique, engaging, and original
content along with the option to choose what we want to consume.
So, get your subscription now to your favorite OTT platform
and binge-watch your favorite show.

Rise of OTT platform as
a game changer
Streaming platforms such as Netflix and Amazon
prime levelled the playing Field and pandemic
fast forwarded the process that otherwise would
have taken years. When pandemic shut down
everything, eulogies for Stardom were already
being written for the economy that survives
around a star big budgets of which the star
himself take the lion’s share extravagant
promotional budget and big ticket releases.
However with theatre shut due to covid -19, the
big names felt an immediate pinch . Among the
big stars, only Akshay Kumar’s Lakshmi and
Salman khan's s saw a release on Ott and by all
accounts, got a reaction that was long way from
the Popularity among audience.
Pankaj Tripathi also gained a lot from the Ott
medium. Heading Mirzapur which releases it
season two in 2020, the versatile actor got a
strong hold on web too. in fact most of his Film
had a premier in the last one year- Gunjan
Saxena, Mimi and ludo After a powerful
performance in Scam 1992-The Harshad Mehta
Story, Pratik Gandhi has now singed a big-scale
web series for the streaming giant Netflix.
Pinkvilla has exclusively learnt that the show has
been titled ‘For Your Eyes Only’ and will see
Gandhi playing the role of an intelligence officer.
OTT has given new stardom to many actors. Some
of the best craftsmen that we have seen in the
last few years are from the digital platform. The
web has the potential to tell stories that are
modern and nuanced as opposed to films that are
made for commercial reasons, often catering to
the lowest common denominator.
Does Bollywood still needs
multi-starer movies or
good scripts?
Gone are the days when the word ‘star’ meant only
Bollywood. Actors on digital platforms feel the best thing
about OTT is that they do not have to perform over a single
weekend and their shelf life is long. Word of mouth can
develop over a period of time and audiences can keep
going back, watching it over and over again. This takes
away the pressure to cater to the lowest common
denominator by adding songs and unnecessary comic
interludes.
The burgeoning online media and entertainment business
received a major boost from the Covid-19 pandemic, setting a
new growth trajectory for the industry. Audiences adopted a
more digitally advanced way of entertainment, something that
went beyond the conventional mediums, leading to mass
adoption of OTT platforms which resulted in a surge in both
viewership and watch-time. This growth in demand for quality
content online led to an increased focus on storytelling across
languages leading to the creation of extensive and expansive
content libraries.
Manish Kalra, Chief Business Officer, ZEE5 India, says,
“Accessibility of quality content and the convenience in
consumption increased audience appetite for diverse content
across markets. Further, complementing the increased
adoption of connected devices, we see a trend of living room
experience in almost every household, today. This surge in
the connected devices ecosystem has made OTT a preferred
choice not only for personal but also for family consumption.
At ZEE5, we have seen a 3X gro.

REFLECTIONS
This project has provided me with a very valuable
learning experience and gave chance to interview with
these ten people working in different walks of life
However, listening to my classmates perform their pieces
each week was one of my favorite parts about the course.
It was great to hear people taking the texts that we were
reading and engage with them by relating them to
personal things and experiences. It provided me with a
better understanding overall of the topics and issues.
Throughout the project there were many quotes that I
found compelling and exemplary, its content and
objectives. “The fact that the most important thing we
learn in our life is though experience, well fits in this
sphere too. This project helps me understand how to
corelate with each and discuss about the prospective of
them on any topic and gave me a chance to know how
they think and why they think different.

Question. What do you think about the change in the
platform of intertainment from cinema halls to OTT
platform, do you think that older generation people in
rular areas know about OTT platforms?
Answer 1. The change in era and cinematography have
made a wide contribution in our endian society , when we
were young around 18 -19 .I watched my first movie in
theatre that was purav and paaschim (remembering the
movies song he started singing hai reet jaha ki preet saada
mein geet Waha ke gaya hoon bharat ka Rehne Wala
hoon) , then laughed hastingly. Nowadays those good
scripts and songs have vanished from Bollywood, so I
watch OTT with my family. We have watched mirzapur,
the family man, sacred games, the stranger things, John
wick, the game of thrones, as you asked me in question
it’s true that many people’s even don’t know even OTT
platforms especially older generation of village but there
grand daughter and grandson are the one who introduced
them with technology I remembered my son in my village
helped his grandma watching her time old movies because
it was there time so they need not OTT platforms then
know that entertainment for night time is still shree ram
entering to the land of
mithila it’s their enjoyment and OTT focuses more on
young generations there some content’s maybe
inappropriate for there rituals and ethics so it’s better that
they know there old Bollywood time of Rajesh khanna,
devanand and shaami kaapor sir.

Question. Do you think nepotism is favored in Bollywood
and according to you which actor/actress has given their
best
performance in OTT platform where there is no partiality at
all the thing that works is skillset and talent there?
Answer 2. Yes, for sure like a talented and full of
potential actor like sushant singh rajput had become the
target of nepotism and the thing went to that stage where
he attempted suicide (it’s speaker’s own viewpoint) .
Arjun kaapor, Alia bhatt, ayush sharma, sonam kapoor
sonakshi sinha these have become the face of Bollywood
even many of them are those who intakes drugs, alcohol
even Aryan khan was caught by NCB for the case of
narcotics are they role models of our youth generation.
Some of actors like rajpal yadav , kartik Aryan , pankaj
tripathi, ranbir singh, Vicky Kaushal, ,manoj vaajpaaye
, Rajkumar rao, ayushman khuranna ,nawaazuddin
siddique are the true talents even rajpal who looks like
dumb is a student of National school of drama. It is not
like star kids are not talented we have ranvir Kapoor ,
tiger shroof, hrithik Roshan (his grandfather was a great
actor of his time),so the main thing is your acting and how
well you are groomed with your skills and
appetites. The entire business module of commercial films
had been tweaked. For Film industry that cast mega stars to
ensure number at ticket windows, is now vying over getting
hold on actors, who are new star of small screen.
QUESTION. SO, MAM ACCORDING TO YOU WHAT
MIGHT BE THE REASONS BEHIND OTT
PPLATFORM'S TO BE STARTED IN INDIA?
Answer OK, well young man you asked a question that
needs to be addressed by me then my information may be in
evident, but I Will try to answer you question as much as
possible (After a silence of 5 minutes she spoked in her
alarming and clear voice),
So, OTT platforms were already present in the market.
Regional contents and shows have their own uniqueness,
authenticity, and purity that cannot be found in any
mainstream show. This was always a known fact and many
of us have also appreciated it. The respect came out in the
huge limelight with the inevitable pause created by the
arrival of Covid-19. The turbulent period has brought
hardships to several industries such as automobile,
hospitality, tourism, and many others. But amid this
troublesome time, the most thriving industry is the media
and the entertainment industry, especially the OTT sphere
and content-driven regional shows. (After taking some
time to recollect with serious gestures she starts again). As
per the reports released by the PwC (‘Global
Entertainment & Media Outlook 2020-2024’), India has
turned into the fastest-growing market for various OTT
platforms. It is expected to turn into the largest market
with an annual
growth rate of around 28.6%(it may varies according to her)
and no one can deny the fact that the appetite for the content
and unstoppable digital platform made it all possible. The
annual report of the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and
Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) also indicated the
growth of these OTT platforms. All of these made it a more
suitable situation to let the market grow at a blistering pace.
From Ms. Mamta rani/Teacher/Age-39
How is OTT different from Cable?
Ans - OTT means streaming anywhere – the subway, the stadium, the
park, or the coffee shop – anywhere you can connect to Wi-Fi (or
Internet) signal. OTT also offers accessibility and mobility. You can
view streamed OTT content on mobiles, laptops, or any compatible
devices having OTT apps and an Internet connection.
OTT market also has a significant influence in the urban areas
because of the religious language content that some of the over-the-
top
channels provide, such as Zee TV, Sun TV, etc. But in the urban areas,
most people watch western or Indian movies, and in that case,
Amazon Prime, Netflix, etc., are more popular.
From Mr. Aayush Sharma/Student/Age 17
Ques. Why do you think OTT left such a good impact on
people in such a short time?
Ans- Consumers have taken the driver’s seat as they are no longer
restricted to what’s being broadcast. Viewers can create a more
personalized experience by selecting from a broad menu of content.
Ques. So, sir according to you why would third-party brands
want to be on an OTT messaging platform then?
ANSWER: That’s very good question Honestly? Because
that’s where the people are. Take a look at these active user
numbers for some of the best-known OTT messaging
platforms and you’ll get a sense of the possibilities that a lot
of third-party brands see in this space:
WhatsApp:
Facebook
Messenger:
WeChat:
In today’s highly digital, distraction-filled world, one of the
biggest challenges that brands face is getting and holding the
attention of current and potential customers long enough to
convince them to take action — whether that’s visiting their
website, downloading their app, joining their email list, or
making a purchase. Apps can be a powerful tool for customer
engagement, but with the average user spending 80% of their
mobile app time in only their favorite three apps, it’s
becoming harder to get all but the most-engaged members of
your audience to consistently interact with your app. By
leveraging the massive, highly-engaged audience that these
platforms hold, third-party brands can grasp opportunities to
reach new customers and strengthen relationships with
existing customers that they wouldn’t otherwise have.
FROM MR SANJEEV DHARIWAL /SERVICE MAN/ [ AGE 48]
QUES 2. Over the Top (OTT) platforms have redefined their purpose and need for
the consumers over the years. Sir can you tell how the growing popularity of on
demand content have given a push to language content creators with more prolific
and relatable content?
ANS. This is very good question firstly we need to study the trends of OTT content
and consumption, and hence this report. While OTT players are thriving to achieve
their best, there was a need to understand the dynamics of each platform from
consumption, content, cost, revenue, and connections point of view.
ConClusion

But Amazon Prime and Netflix have their special advantages for their viewers and
certainly, it will give tough Competition to big screens.
Between OTT platforms and Bollywood, which has better content?
It’s a little unfair to give a blanket statement and choose one medium over another.
The joy of watching films on the big screen will not go away, but with the advent
of OTT a lot has changed and the whole process of filmmaking has become more
democratic. Due to OTT, one can see varied kinds of filmmaking and a lot of new
faces, which wasn’t possible with the theatrical release of films.
This question has a fundamental issue of understanding, any number of producers,
directors, scriptwriters or actors from Bollywood could easily release their
products on an OTT platform as a film, web series or TV series.
Therefore Bollywood and OTT platforms are not mutually exclusive.
