Quantitative Estimation of Antiacid in Solution (Moles/liter)

Aim :

To estimate the concentration of sodium bicarbonate present in the given anti-acid solution, in moles/liter

Principle:

Sodium bicarbonate is an antiacid used to relieve heartburn and acid indigestion, the method is an acid- base
titration method, since sodium bicarbonate is weak base, it is neutralized with hydrochloric acid.

HCl + NaHCO3 → NaCl + H2O + CO2

Hydrochloric acid Sodium Bicarbonate Sodium Chloride Carbon dioxide

Each 1 mole of hydrochloric acid ≡ 1 mole of Sodium Bicarbonate

Materials required

Sample, hydrochloric acid, methyl orange indicator, Burette, Pipette, Conical flask, dropper , beaker and measuring
cylinder.
.

Assay Procedure

1. Fill the burette with HCl up to Zero

2. Pipette 20 mL of the sample and transfer into a conical flak.
3. Add 2 drops of methyl orange indicator (yellow color will appear)
4. Titrate with 0.1 M hydrochloric acid solution until you obtain the end point. Yellow color change to pink).
5. Repeat the procedure for three times and record the readings
