AUDIOSCRIPT:
Today, we are continuing our lecture series on chronic pain and how to deal with it. As we all know, many people
live with pain every day. In fact, one in 10 people suffers from chronic pain at some point in his/her life. First, let
me begin with the definition of chronic pain. In simple terms, chronic pain is pain that does not go away. When
pain lasts longer than 4 to 6 months (Q1), we can call it chronic. Many doctors won't consider pain chronic unless
it has lasted for 4 to 6 months, and is lowering your quality of life. There are different types of chronic pain, but
many of them are not clearly understood. Chronic pain may result from an illness or disability. Some types of
chronic pain start after an injury or accident and become chronic over time. In general, chronic pain is confused
with acute pain (Q2,A) but they are different. Acute pain decreases gradually, but chronic pain can disrupt your
daily routine, prevent you from working or cause feelings of hopelessness and worry (Q2,C). Chronic pain affects
both genders; however, the rates are slightly higher in women (Q2,B). Although chronic pain can occur at any
age, it is most common in middle age.
If you have had the same kind of pain for many months without relief, you should see a doctor (Q5,A). He may
perform tests, prescribe medications (Q5,C) or give you physical therapy treatments (Q5,B). Also, you must
remember that you have an important role in this (Q4). During this time, you should keep a journal about your
pain. In your journal, include how you feel at different times of the day such as after taking medications, after
therapy, during stress and after eating. You should write down your feelings as well. All of this information can
help you better understand your pain. The key to managing your pain is to find the strategy that works best for
you. Your doctor should be your main source of information, but it may be helpful during this time to talk to
other people who have had similar experiences. Doctors routinely prescribe medications and physical therapy to
treat chronic pain. However, because this is a personal experience, the same treatment does not work for
everybody (Q3). This is why there are so many kinds of pain killers on the market today. You may get rid of pain
by using medications alone if you find the right one for you.
In addition to traditional treatments, there are also alternative treatments for chronic pain. Listening to music is
one of them. A study which was published in 2006 found that listening to music every day decreased chronic
pain and depression. Now let me explain how the study worked. 60 people took part in it (Q6). All of them had
some kind of pain. Participants were divided into 3 groups. In each group, there were 20 people. Two of the
groups listened to music for an hour a day. The third group did not listen to music and served as the control
group (Q7). All three groups kept a pain diary. The first music group chose their favorite music to listen to. Their
choices included pop, rock, slow, and nature sounds. The second music group was given relaxing music which
was selected by the researchers.
The results of the study showed both groups that listened to music had less pain and depression (Q8). Do you
have a headache? Just turn on some music and feel the pain go away. That is all for today. Thank you for
listening.
