UNIT 1
Exercise 1: Complete the summary below. Write ONE WORD OR A NUMBER for each answer.
Alice's Flight
Alice is talking to her friend Danny about the flight she just took. She says it was one of the most
difficult experiences she had. It started at the airport where she boarded. The way the security
1__staff__ handled procedures seemed inefficient. The flight was also very lengthy. Alice has never
been on a 2__13__ -hour flight before. She slept most of the way, though, occupied herself by
reading and playing 3___cards___ . There were also individual screens where one could watch
movies and play 4__video__ games. After telling her story, Danny suggests going somewhere to get
a drink and to 5___relax___.

SCRIPT:
Alice: Hi, Danny.
Danny: Hey, Alice. Oh, it's so good to see you. How was your flight?
Alice: He he he, oh you can't tell? Well, I've flown on planes before, but I must say, this was one of the most
difficult experiences I've ever had.
Danny: Oh my, what happened?
Alice: Well, it started at the airport where I boarded my flight. The line to enter the restricted area was just
incredible. I understand the need for caution, of course. The way security staff handled procedures at the airport,
though, seemed extremely inefficient (1).
Danny: I hope the flight was OK, at least.
Alice: The flight actually went well for the most part. It was really long. I don't think I've ever been on a
thirteen-hour flight before (2).
Danny: Wow, weren't you bored at all?
Alice: Yes, I was a little bit. Fortunately, I slept through about three-quarters of the way. For the last four
hours of the flight or so, I tried reading a book and playing cards (3). Danny: Was the in-flight entertainment
good?
Alice: It was not that bad at all, really. Each person had an individual screen. It's mounted on the back of each
seat. They have a selection of movies and even video games (4). Danny: Then I suppose everything went well
when you landed.
Alice: Oh, that was also a huge hassle. Since I'm not a citizen here, I had to go to the 'foreign visitors' line to
get processed. Again, it was not very efficient at all.
Danny: You know, we should go get some coffee. I know this great place where we can relax. Sounds
good to me (5).

Exercise 2: Choose the correct letter, A, B, or C.

3. One of Patty's strength is that she

A. is very energetic.
B. can multitask.
C. is well spoken.

4.What did Patty do when she had a problem with a coworker at another job? A. She told

B. She sat with a coworker and a manager to solve the problem.
C. She asked someone else to solve the problem.
5. What is one idea Patty suggested to make the company better?
A. spending money for faster Internet access
B. spending money to create new applications for the Internet
C. spending money for more Internet advertisements
SCRIPT:
Patty: Hello, my name is Lorena Patty. I applied for the managerial position here. Daniel: Yes, Patty,
hello. Please, sit down. How was it getting here? Not too much trou ble, I hope?
Patty: Oh, it was fine. The trains were running on time today (1).
Daniel: That's good. Let me ask you this first: how did you hear about our company? Patty: I first heard about
you through online advertisements on the Internet (2). I've seen them for a while. Actually, I really admire
what the company does.
Daniel: Well, thank you so much for that. Now, could you name me one strength you have and one
weakness?
Patty: I am extremely organized and can handle many different tasks at once (3). Sometimes,
though, I am a little too honest criticizing others.
Daniel: This company certainly needs organized people. Tell me about a time you had a problem at work, and
how you solved that problem.
Patty: I guess I can tell you about a project I was working on in a previous company. One of our team members
wasn't contributing enough. I had to take that person aside and tell her firmly that the project was very
important. I told her that if she didn't work on her part more, then she would be replaced (4).
Daniel: I see. Sometimes situations come up like that. So, can I ask you then, if you were head of the company
here, how would you make us more competitive?
Patty: Well, I would continue pushing our best brands, but also make sure money was being used to
research new products. Products that had to do with Internet technology (5), especially, would receive
funding.
Daniel: OK, well, I think that's enough now. I'm glad that I got to talk to you. Patty: Oh, the pleasure was mine.
Thank you for considering me. I look forward to hearing from you.
Daniel: We will contact you by e-mail when we make our decision and then follow up with a phone call.
Patty: Sounds great. Thanks again.

Dorothy: For the headache, you should sit down and relax (1). If the stomach pain is not too bad, maybe
drinking some soda will help (2).
Leon: Actually, I did, just a few minutes ago. You know, I really wanted to meet you at the park but...
Dorothy: Oh, Leon. Don't worry about me, OK? We can go to the park together next weekend (3). Just rest and

Guide: Hello, everybody. Welcome to the Central Valley Tourist and Information Center. I'm really happy that all
of you are interested in exploring this part of the country. I'm going to tell you about the local area and about
some of the places you can visit. Feel free to ask me questions at any time. On this map of the area, the Tourist
and Information Center 1s marked by a black square (1). The road you came from, the one in front of the
Center, is called Sunny Farm Road (2). This road is where people used to take their wheat and corn to market. It
turns north and then forks. The east fork, the one going to the right here, heads toward the lake. We call this
Big Fish Lake (3). It's actually one of the largest lakes in the country. The west fork of the road, going the other
way, leads to the mountains. The locals call these the Painted Mountains (4) because they look like someone

used different colors to paint them. The mountains have hiking for all skill levels and the scenery is absolutely
gorgeous.
Tourist: Excuse me, that island in the middle of the lake (5)? Can we go there?
Guide: Yes, actually, thank you for reminding me. That is 'Horse Island' (5). Named so because it is one of the
few places where wild horses are allowed to roam free. You can take a ferry to the island and go camping. The
ferry leaves from the Southern Terminal, on the bottom side of the lake here on the map. Are there any other
questions? OK, now let me tell you about the first people to settle the area. They arrived over 35,000 years ago.

Kyrie: So, Matthew, what are you going to do your thesis on?
Matthew: I'm not sure yet, Kyrie. I've gone over some ideas with my professor, but I haven't written a thesis
proposal yet.
Kyrie: Yeah, sometimes it's really hard to choose just one idea. I already submitted mine. I am going to describe
one aspect of how mobile telephones are changing life in the rural areas of developing countries (1).
Matthew: Oh, nice. Who is going to be your thesis advisor?
Kyrie: Professor Green is going to be my advisor (2).
Matthew: Green, like the color? I've never heard of him before. Is he new?
Kyrie: Yes, he's a visiting lecturer. He's only here temporarily while the other professor is on a leave of
absence.
Matthew: That's Professor Smith, right? How long is she going away for?
Kyrie: Well, we talked right before she left last year. She said she was going to be gone for one academic year.
So she'll be teaching again, not the spring of next year, but the fall term next year (3).
Matthew: Wow, I had no idea she would be gone for so long.
Kyrie: Me neither. But after talking to her, I can see why. She'll be lecturing at a university in Germany first.
After that, she is going to do research for her book in China (4). Matthew: What's the book going to be
about?
Kyrie: I'm not really sure... but I think, in general, it will be about workers from the countryside and how they

SCRIPT:
Welcome everyone. Thanks for turning in to Arts National – the weekly news show focused on the arts
community. I’m your host, Adam Easton. Our top story this week is that Auckland will be celebrating the
reopening of one of its oldest theaters, widely seen as a push to revive stage entertainment in the city. After
nearly 20 year wait, the famed Queens Theatre will once again open to audiences. The entertainment structure
was originally built in 1857. What was the purpose of the facility at that time? Well, it ran stage plays, later
movies as well as live performances. But the theater was forced to close in 1972 when attendance started
dropping (1). Audiences were staying home and watching television, and the theater was unable to stay in
business. However, there was renewed interest in the historical structure nearly 25 years later when the
Auckland Theatre association – an organization consisting of Auckland’s most renowned theatrical professionals
– began petitioning the city to provide a permit for the theater's renovations (2). It was granted in 1998, and a
local construction crew began work to restore the theater to its original condition. Progress stalled in 2000 due to
a lack of funds, but In 2009 an Anonymous donor provided the necessary money to complete the renovations.
Effort recommenced, and the restoration project was finally finished just last month. According to Michelle
McColl, Director of the Auckland Theater Association, their hope is that the reopened Queens Theatre Will
provide a space for community, creativity, and youth engagement. A special program Will be held to celebrate
the reopening this coming Saturday (3) including several short performances by theatrical troupes. And then our
first scheduled show, a dramatic play entitled “clear path ahead” begins on Monday. Those from the general
public who wish to attend the opening performance may purchase tickets from the Auckland Theater
Association’s website, or visit the Queen’s Theater box office between the hours of 11 AM and 4 PM any
weekday. Seating is limited, with a maximum capacity of 250 people, so a sold-out event is likely. Advance
booking is highly recommended (4).

open it up, there is a clear plastic cover on the inside. On the other side there are a few pockets.
Officer: Can you tell me what was in your wallet when it was stolen?
Male: There was about 50 dollars worth of cash in it, also my school identification card, my driver's license,
and a picture of my family (2) (3). Oh, yes, there were some discount cards for local restaurants and coffee
shops.
Officer: Now, how was your wallet stolen?
Male: I was at the cafeteria with my friends. I was showing them something and I had my wallet out. We went
to go get food and I left my wallet on the table (4). It was really careless of me, I should've kept it... When I had
to pay for my food, I remembered I had left my wallet. I went back to the table, but by that time, someone had
taken it.
Officer: I'm sorry to hear about that. Actually, there has been an increase in the number of thefts reported. I
would advise you to be careful about your other posses- sions. Can I have your dorm room number and your
telephone extension?
Male: I live in Noyes Circle 917 and my extension is 1981 (5).
Officer: 1-9-8-1, got it. We will look into your case and if anything shows up, we'll inform you about it,

Yuki: Yeah, I know, they're pretty far away. Fortunately, mine are coming to visit me here before I start
summer classes (2). How about you, Jaime?
Jaime: I just saw my parents last month, during Parents' Weekend. I'm going to South America for most of the
summer to volunteer and study Spanish (3).
Yuki: Wow, that's great.
Minsoo: Yeah, actually, after working for most of the summer, I'm going to visit Jaime down there for a few
weeks (4). You should come along if you can.
Yuki: I would really like to, you know. Let me think, my summer courses end a few weeks before the fall term
starts, so I would have the time to go.
Jaime: You should totally visit Minsoo and me then. You both can stay over in my dorm room. No need to pay for
a hostel or anything.
Yuki: Actually, money is one reason why I don't think I can go. Plane tickets are awfully expensive
these days.
Minsoo: You know, Yuki, while I'm at home, that job is going to help me pay for my flight. Jaime:Yeah, maybe
while you are taking summer classes, you could get a job too. Yuki: Hmm... we'll see. It's an awfully difficult
engineering course, so I'm not sure if I'll be able to study and work at the same time (5).
Jaime: I really hope you can. I think all of us would have a really fun time. Minsoo: Yeah, doing both at the
same time will be tough, but it will definitely be worth it. Yuki: OK, well, I'll have to see what jobs are available
on campus during the summer and then.

SCRIPT:
Presenter: Hello, everyone. Today, I want to introduce Ms. Hinkel. She will talk about upcoming summer camp
activities. Ms. Hinkel?
Ms. Hinkel: Thank you. I've given out a list of different activities we have for the children. I want to go over each
of them to say what age group they are appropriate for. We have two groups of kids this year, one whose ages
range from 8-11 and another whose ages range from 12-15. As is tradition every year, we start off with a
campfire singing session that everyone attends. The next day there is a kayaking excursion for the older group
who will all be boating down the river to another campground. They will stay there for one night and sleep
under the stars. For the younger group that stays behind, there will be a crafts fair that includes activities like
shirt coloring and basket weaving (2). There will be various booths where kids can learn how to do different
projects. The next day, the kids who are eight to eleven will go on a short hike to learn about the forest
ecosystem (3). They will learn about the different parts of a healthy forest, like the trees and animals, and how
they all depend on each other. The twelve to fifteen group will come back later that day and will learn about
camp cooking outdoors (4). That includes how to make a cooking fire and how to prepare basic meals out in the
wild. The closing ceremony at the end of the session will also involve both groups (5). I hope that answers
everything. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Then there’s The Light House Café – you can see the picture here – which isn’t really a café at all. In fact, it’s a
great restaurant and a lot of TV celebrities and actors eat there (2). In that case what about Harvey’s? The same

Leisure centre
Manager: Now some of you won’t have been to Park Hill Leisure Centre before, so let me just tell you a little
about the layout. As you can see, the reception area here is very spacious, and there is plenty of room to meet
your friends and have a drink. We also have brand-new dance studios with floor-to-ceiling mirrors and the latest
audio equipment. The dance studios are to the left of the reception area, behind the swimming pool. No ...
sorry ... I meant opposite the swimming pool (5). Both the roller skating and skateboarding classes will be held
in the Skate Arena. This has also been refurbished and we have a new five-metre ramp in there which is proving
to be popular. The arena is behind the changing rooms, which you can see behind us. between the gym and
tennis courts (6). The tennis courts are on the right of the arena. You’ll see both of these new spaces on the
tour later (7).
Now, the final thing I want to talk about is how to join the Park Hill Leisure Centre and enrol for the classes.
First you need to complete an enrolment form with some of your personal details, including your address and
telephone number and the name of your school. If you’re under sixteen years old, then you’ll also be required
to get your parents’ permission to take part in the classes. Please ask one of your parents to sign the
authorisation form attached to the enrolment form. You’ll find the form in your information pack. When you’ve
done this, you just hand the forms to reception. You can pay an annual subscription of twenty pounds, or
alternatively, you can pay each time you use the facilities. There is a one pound sixty admission fee in this case.
Whether you decide to pay in one go or with each visit, you still need to complete the forms in your pack and
become a member. Once we have the forms, we’ll send your membership card to your home address. All you
need to do is show this card every time you come to the centre, and if you want to book a class, you just need
your membership number on your card.

A: So, I think we'd better start planning what we're going to do for our group project. Have you guys had any
ideas?
B: I was thinking we should do something on extreme weather events, but I think Alex had some different
ideas.
C: Yes, Alex, but I don’t think we’d be able to get much data on that, and we don’t really have time to do our
own research (1).
A: What about doing something about the seasons?
B: I think the seasons might be a bit too wide-reaching (2), you know, when we take into account the wind
patterns and pressure systems.
A: Maybe you're right. Well, how about Tom's idea of extreme weather conditions? B: Yes, that sounds
like a good idea. It’s easy to break down into separate parts and it certainly sounds more interesting!
(3)
A: Maybe we should look into more localised weather conditions and the effects on the immediate environment.
C: That’s a good idea.

Exercise 3. Write the collect a letter, a, B, C or D next two questions 1 - 4

1. blizzards __D__

4. cyclones __A__

SCRIPT:
Alex: Well, we have got lots to choose from: we could do blizzards, heat wave, droughts, cyclones.
There’re loads! What don’t you do blizzards too, Tom?
Tom: I don’t fancy doing them (1), but I wouldn’t mind doing something on floods (2). They are linked to
monsoons, I think, so it will be an easy transition. What do you fancy doing, Alex? Alex: Well, I could always
cover winds.
Emma: But that isn’t really extreme enough.
Alex: hmm... I could do hurricanes, they are pretty exciting. How about doing cyclones, Emma? Emma: It’s
rather do heat waves and droughts (3), I think. I know a bit about them. I don’t know anything about
cyclones.
Alex: Cyclones are really interesting, I can cover them (4).

B: That would be helpful, thanks.
A: OK, so we're here at the Help Desk, next to the Service Desk, where you go to borrow and return books.
The maximum number of books you can borrow at any one time is ten. B: Yes, I see.
A: Opposite the Service Desk is the Training Room (5), which is used by library staff to give demonstrations of
the computer systems to staff and students. But the entrance is round the other side.
B: Is the Training Room beside the Quiet Room?
10
Anh ngữ Ms.Vi 0902189167

A: Yes, that's right, with the entrance round the front too. It's important to remember that all mobile
phones must be switched off in this room.
B: Of course. And what about books - where can I find the books for my course? A: Good question. You're
studying Geography so, if you walk past the Service Desk, turn right, no sorry turn left, and continue on
past the Philosophy section (6). You’ll find the Geography section. The copying facilities are on the left. Now
one more important thing is the Group Study Room and the booking system. If you're working on a project
with other students and you want to discuss things with each other, you can go to the room in the corner at
the opposite end of the library from the copiers. That’s the Group Study Room. It’s between the Sociology
section and the TV room (7). The Group Study Room must be booked forty-eight hours in advance.
B: Right, thanks. Can I keep this map?
A: Actually, this is the last one I have, but I can make a copy for you.
B: That would be great, thanks.
A: Oh, I should also explain how you book the Group Study Room.
B: Oh, yes, so how do I do that?
A: You can only book this room using the online reservation system. The same one you use to reserve books
that are currently on loan.
B: I thought it was called the online catalogue system.
A: No, that's for searching for things in the library; the reservation system is what you use to make a room
booking.
B: And can I access that from outside the library?
A: Yes, via the library website. You will need to enter the name and student number of each student in the
group too, so make sure you have these to hand when you make the booking. But all this is explained on the
home page of the website. Once you’ve made your reservation request, you’ll receive a confirmation email
from the library to sav whether your booking has been successful or not. If not, you can try to arrange another
time.
B: Well that sounds fairly easy.
A: Yes, you'll be fine. It's all quite straightforward really.
B: Thanks.

Exercise 2: Choose THREE letters, A-H. Which THREE are recommended to take with you?
A. camera
B. food and drink
C. mosquito repellent
D. walking boots
E. sunscreen
F. large bag
G cash
H extra clothes

SCRIPT:
We’ll be going on a 6-mile hike and the terrain will be pretty uneven. So, you really must have some really
strong footwear, like a good pair of boots. There will be plenty of photo opportunities on this trip, so I
know many of you will want to take a camera, but I’m afraid it is prohibited.
I also see that many of you have your binoculars with you. However, I must explain that the forest will be pretty
dense where’re we going so you may not have many opportunities to use them. On our trip, it will be quite
shaded, you don’t need to worry about sunscreen. Mosquito repellent on the other hand is often useful but not
at this time of year. We’ll be walking for a few hours so you might want to bring refreshments with you. Once
you enter the park, there’s no where to buy anything so definitely that’s a must.
Now if I were you, I’d take a good size rucksack with you as you may want to bring a change of clothing with

you as well as other personal items.

I know many people recommend to take local currency with you on the trip, but the souvenir shop which is
outside the park, does take credit cards, as well as dollars and euros. So, I leave that decision entirely up to you.
