I.Introduction
1.In the world
The global packaging manufacturing industry is a very large industry with an
estimated value of up to hundreds of billions of dollars. According to a market
analysis report by SPG Media Group, global packaging industry trends is as
follows: The global packaging industry is worth 424 billion USD, Europe accounts
for 127 billion, Asia accounts for 114 billion, North America 118 billion, Latin
America 30 billion, and other countries accounts for 30 billion.
In terms of percentage, Europe accounts for 30%, North America accounts for
28%, Latin America accounts for 7%, Asia accounts for 27% and 8% belongs to
other regions.

Materials used in the global packaging industry include paper accounting for the
most 36%, metal 17%, plastic 34%, glass 10% and other types accounting for 3%.
2.In Vietnam
With an average growth rate of 15%-20% in the coming years, packaging is
considered to be among the fastest growing industries in Vietnam. This is
information given by experts at the event introducing the 17th International
Exhibition on processing and packaging technology in Vietnam - ProPak Vietnma
2024 in HoChiMinh city-February 29, 2024 .
Vietnam currently has more than 900 businesses and factories with about 70%
located in the southern region. The paper packaging market scale in Vietnam in
2024 is about 2.6 billion USD and is expected to reach 4.14 billion USD by 2029,
growing at CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate). Or like metal box packaging
in Vietnam, it is expected to reach 2.11 billion USD by 2024 and is expected to
reach 2.45 billion USD by 2029, with a CAGR of 3.07%.

specializing in the production of carton products of all kinds of 3,5,7 layers.
Various types of carton boxes are environmentally friendly, serving many fields
such as food, electronics, fashion, and packaging and transportation activities for

II.Production process.
The carton packaging production process will include 6 steps
1.Import raw materials
The main raw material for producing carton packaging is rolled carton paper,
usually produced from wood fiber (recycled paper or raw paper). For example,
high quality kraft paper, meeting the requirements for making high-quality surface
paper, corrugated paper for the production of corrugated carton packaging.

2.Create corrugated carton packaging (The most important
step)
The characteristic of carton boxes is that they can withstand the entire gravity of
the product, preventing impact or damage to the goods during transportation.
Therefore, the corrugated layer that creates carton paper in the middle of the box is
a cushioning layer that helps increase the bearing capacity of the products when
packaged.

Based on these types of corrugated iron, depending on the order, the factory will
produce different types of cartons such as single, 3-layer, 5-layer cartons.
To produce suitable types of carton, there will be a separate line for each type.
For example, a 3-layer carton production line.

The corrugated carton line includes main parts: corrugated machine, paper roll
lifting machine and glue applicator, drying rack, slitting machine, sheet cutting
machine.
The number of machines needed is determined by the product: to create a 3-layer
cover requires a corrugated machine and a 1-layer glue applicator. To create a 5-
layer cardboard, you need 2 corrugated machines and a 2-layer glue applicator. To
create 7-layer cardboard, 3 corrugated machines and a 3-layer glue applicator are
needed.
Corrugated machines come in many types, classified by paper size and maximum
size and machine speed.

Paper roll elevators have screw type and hydraulic type. The hydraulic type is now
more popular due to its convenience and stronger lifting/clamping force.
Glue applicators have different types: 1-stage, 2-stage and 3-stage glue applicators
for 3, 5 and 7-layer corrugated cardboard production lines.

The dryer's size and length are based on the largest paper size required and the line
speed. The higher the line speed, the longer the drying coil.
There are two main types of slitting machines: fully automatic slitting machines
and electric thin knife slitting machines..

The carton cutting machine is used for corrugated cardboard lines and has a spiral
knife type and a straight knife type. The spiral knife has a smaller cutting force
than the machine, runs smoother and is more durable.

3. Printing and material processing
Here we will use the Flexo printing method. This is a method of using embossed
prints to print directly. This can be considered the most advanced version of
printing as it can be printed on any surface. In production, we have a specialized
carton Flexo printer for the production line. This machine is suitable for printing
large quantities of industrial goods while still ensuring print quality.
Flexo printing machines for carton boxes have the same structure:
• Input rolls of printing paper
• Color stations
• Dryer between color stations to avoid ink smudging
• Print cutting department after completing the printing job
4. Processing
This is the step where we will create cutting shapes and cut grooves on the carton
according to the customer's order.
In this stage, we will use a round stamping machine. The round stamping machine
is used for orders with large quantities and needs continuous production.

5. Packaged and shipped
After completion, the product will be checked for quality and quantity. After
ensuring the order will be packaged and prepared for delivery to the customer.

III.Overview
The machines in this carton packaging production line mainly use PLC
programming, which can be easily seen through the electrical cabinets in each
machine of each stage. That requires employees to have a high level of knowledge
about automation in general and PLC programming in particular.

In Vietnam, carton factories have applied continuous production lines, but if we
pay attention, we can see that in the process of moving paper rolls into position by
lifting machines, most still use manual methods. The job is to use a forklift to
move. If possible, we can still automate this step by using a hydraulic trolley
system. This device can automatically move the paper roll to the elevator position,
this method can increase continuity in the factory.
