Garbage Disposal in Senior High Students in San Roque National High

School

I. Background of the Study (Introduction)

The management of waste has become a critical issue in educational

institutions, particularly in senior high schools, where the engagement of

students can significantly influence future behaviors regarding sustainability.

San Roque National High School serves as a compelling case study for

exploring the complexities of waste management within this context,

especially as it navigates a growing student population and limited

resources.

In the Philippines, educational institutions, including senior high schools,

contribute significantly to waste generation. The Department of Education

reports that schools produce approximately 1.8 million tons of waste

annually (Department of Education, 2023). This statistic underscores the

urgency of implementing effective waste management strategies not only to

mitigate environmental impacts but also to promote public health and

safety. Improper waste disposal can lead to pollution, health risks, and a

negative impact on the overall learning environment, making it essential for

senior high schools to prioritize responsible waste management practices.

sustainability fosters long-term positive behaviors regarding waste reduction

and environmental stewardship (Gonzalez et al., 2024). By actively

1
involving students in waste management initiatives, schools can cultivate a

culture of responsibility and environmental awareness, encouraging

students to apply these principles in their communities. At San Roque

National High School, several challenges hinder effective waste

management. These include inadequate waste disposal infrastructure,

limited student engagement, and a lack of awareness regarding the

importance of waste segregation. Many senior high school students may

not fully grasp the significance of proper waste management, leading to

contamination and inefficiency in recycling efforts. Additionally, the absence

of practical engagement opportunities can result in apathy among students

toward sustainability initiatives.

This research aims to assess the current waste management practices at

San Roque National High School, focusing specifically on senior high

school students.

II. Statement of the Problem

This research study aims to answer the following questions:

1. What challenges do students face in properly disposing of their waste?

2. What impact does improper waste disposal have on the school environment?

3. How can the school improve waste management practices among students?

2
III. Conceptual Framework

The

researchers used the input-process-output model. The input consist of 30

respondents from grade 11 gas students at San Roque National High School And a

Survey questionnaires. The process consist of Distributing survey questionnaires to

the selected respondents gathering responses from the surveys, analyzing the

answers and responses and lastly observing garbage disposal practices in the

classroom. The final output of the study will be a suggested plan to improve

classroom cleanliness, focusing on proper garbage disposal

IV. Scope and Delimitation of the Study

This study is will focused on the awareness, disciplined, and practice of proper solid
waste management in the classroom. This study will only tadde the segregation and
recycling of solid waste produced by the students. Other areas of solid waste
management are not induded in this research. All Senior High School students will be

the respondents of the study. Questionnaires will be given to the students to
determine the application of proper solid waste management.

This study will be conducted to determine the solid waste management awareness,
disciplined and practices among the 30 student's respondents which is limited to all
Senior High School students in their classrooms of San Roque National High School.
This study will be carried out to determine the solid waste management
understanding, discipline, and practices of all Senior High School students in their
classrooms.

V. Significance of the Study

STUDENTS-The study of garbage disposal among senior high school students

focuses on their waste management practices, awareness of environmental impact,
and participation in recycling initiatives. It can reveal trends in behavior, identify
challenges they face, and inform strategies for improving waste disposal habits,
ultimately aiming to cultivate a more environmentally conscious generation
TEACHER- Understanding these dynamics can guide schools in implementing better
waste disposal strategies and educational programs
SCHOOL -Learn and follow the school's waste segregation guidelines. Use the right
bins for paper, plastic, metal, and organic waste.
FUTURE RESEARCHER-As a researcher
health and safety students learn about the risks associated with improper waste
handling, such as disease transmission and potential hazards.

VI. Definition of Terms

For a Grade 11 GAS (General Academic Strand) student at SRNHS (possibly referring to a school
like Santa Rosa National High School), here’s a definition of terms related to garbage disposal:

Garbage Disposal: The process of managing and eliminating waste materials in an efficient and
environmentally friendly manner. It includes the collection, treatment, and proper disposal of
household, industrial, or agricultural waste.

Waste Segregation: The practice of separating waste materials into categories like biodegradable
(organic waste), non-biodegradable (plastics, metals), and hazardous (chemicals, batteries) for
easier disposal or recycling.

Biodegradable Waste: Organic waste that can decompose naturally over time through processes
like composting. Examples include food scraps, leaves, and paper products.

Non-Biodegradable Waste: Waste materials that do not decompose easily, such as plastic, glass,
and metals, which require special treatment like recycling or incineration.

Recycling: The process of converting waste materials into new products to reduce resource
consumption and minimize environmental impacts
