Personal statement
Your personal statement as submitted in your application
To study accounting and finance, for me, is to look beyond the spreadsheets and the numbers. The numbers and the technical aspects are a
mere insight into how the input and output of companies are not only fueling the economy but how the performance of different business
markets are impacted by social factors. The fact business and law can also be combined into this degree is a big appeal to me as it reinforces
the idea that running a profitable and viable company ties into the justice system. Additionally, I feel as though all three of the subjects that I
completed at A-level tie into this degree in one or another. My business study course was an all encompassing aspect in relation to this
degree. It broadened my knowledge into how much thought goes into the model of a business, where and what a company needs to diversify
their profits in order to stamp their presence onto the economy and how important it is to analyze figures in order to be successful.
Furthermore, studying law and history, although humanity subjects, have definitely equipped me with transferable skills for this degree. Law
provided me with ability to conceptualize precedent and apply it to different case studies. Law required the ability to make robust, strategic
and informed decisions based on the information presented. Moreover, history provided me with the ability to delve into why financial
decisions made by the government directly impacted society and how the push and pull of the economy needs to be constantly watched
over in order adjust when necessary. On a break from studying I took the time out to work and start a business. Whilst working for a property
repairs and maintenance company, the facts and and figures of how much they company was making and losing was regularly broken down to
us. This intrigued me as it made me understand how a companies numbers have to be directed just as much as people. My venture into my
own business has been one of the main reasons I am wanting to pursue this degree. Having secured a five bedroom property In order to let
it to students, I understand I would need to hire an accountant to keep in line with financial law. I want to understand the ingoing of what it
means to provide this service to others.
