What is a naturalistic observation?
Naturalistic observation is a critical and indispensable episode in understanding a child. It is through
this method that the behaviors (i.e., cognitive, socio-emotional, physical, self-concept, and self-care)
of children in their natural habitat (e.g., home, school, children's center) are being magnified through
varying lenses, which are consciously, unconsciously, and subconsciously influenced by the
environment (i.e., family, school, community). Thus Education students need to be able to put
themselves in this avenue and carefully see the "childhood" as the subject.
Not only is this an experience but a practical and crucial data collection technique as well in doing a
child study, such that childhood researchers are grounded by the translations of the different child
development theories in real-life scenarios and settings and nevertheless looking into the indications
of the child's developmental milestones which in this case must be done through collecting the
personal recollection of the parents through interviews. However, the student needs to take out the
factors that may distort the objectivity of the process (Hetherington & Parke, 2003). In doing so, it is
essential to characterize the so-called epochè. In this mental process, personal perspectives and
judgments must be consciously suspended to ensure the objectivity of interpreting data.
Data collection modality: Personal recollection of the parents, guided by the developmental
milestones
Informant: Parents
Subject: Students’ childhood
Sampling technique of the personal recollection of the parents:
Event sampling - a technique where the behaviors are only recorded when an event of
particular interest occurs.
Procedure:
A. Conduct of the interview
1. Ask your parents to be your key informant - describing your childhood through their recollection,
guided by the developmental checklists provided by your EDUC 53 Professor.
2. Secure informed consent from them. Educate them that this classwork is purely for application
purposes of our topic on "Typical and Atypical Development". Give them in advance the
checklists for their consumption. Re-assure them that privacy and confidentiality are
guaranteed. Moreover, their rights to participate with their terms and conditions and
withdrawal shall be respected. Attached here is a sample Informed Consent Form.
3. Once the informed consent is secured, set an appointment. It will be in an environment where
the parents are most comfortable and for security purposes.
4. In the conduct of the interviews, ask permission if documentation is allowed. If so, determine
the specific forms of documentation they allow, with their terms and conditions.
5. Ask them about their description of your environment growing up, and how it influenced you.
B. Preparation of the report
1. Paper size: A4
2. Margins: 1 inch on all sides
3. Font style: Arial
4. Font size: 12
5. Spacing: Double
6. Indention: Justified (Note: You must indent the first line of each section with a space)

includes normal expectations of developmental milestones for children, from birth through
adolescence, and information about the possible effects of maltreatment.”
7. In your observation report, particularly in explaining each table, substantiate your observation
findings with at least two references FROM EITHER ELSEVIER OR PUBMED.
8. DO A PLAGIARISM AND GRAMMAR CHECKING OF YOUR PAPER, AND ATTACH AS APPENDICES
THE RESULTS. THERE ARE FREE APPS FOR THIS. YOU JUST HAVE TO EXPLORE. For instance,

Abstract
Instructions:
Write an unstructured abstract about your report. It should provide the following:
The general description of THE REPORT AND THE PROCESS YOU’VE UNDERTAKEN
The highlights of your findings, with your self-drawn implications
The gap you discovered during the interviews and how it can be a baseline for possible research work.
Perhaps there's a part throughout the interview, specifically from the responses of your parents, that
interests you personally. For instance, they might say that "during your toddlerhood, compared to other
children, your expressive language skill was a little bit delayed" - this could be worth researching, like how
a toddler with a similar experience overcame this kind of delay.
Number of words: 250 words maximum
