Exploring Governance: Evaluating Different Political Systems to Find
the Best Fit for the Philippines.
The Philippines, a vibrant Southeast Asian archipelago, boasts a diverse history, culture,
and socio-political landscape that shapes its governance. Over the years, the country has
undergone various forms of government, including colonial rule, martial law, and a return to
democracy. Given the persistent issues of poverty, corruption, and political instability, it is
crucial to assess different government systems to find the one that best meets the unique needs
and aspirations of the Filipino people.
I would describe the current democratic government of the Philippines as a flawed
democracy, as we often see it on television news. Corruption and inequality are now rampant
because they result in persistent poverty, social justice, and unequal access to
opportunities. Democracy gives the strength of representation hence diverse voices influence
governmental decisions and policies that reflect the needs of a population. It encourages
accountability since elected officials need to respond to the electorate in order to get re-elected,
therefore creating a sense of civic engagement. On the other hand, democracy can be inefficient
as decision-making processes can be elongated and may not provide timely response services for
urgent issues. Political polarization can further create gridlocks, with no one willing to cooperate
to achieve efficient governance. In general, democracy addresses the common good in a country,
but issues such as voter apathy and the disproportionate influence of money in politics reduce the
effectiveness of democracy.
Allowing the citizens to participate in decision-making with the current form of
government has crucial benefits in improving the current form of government in the Philippines.
We always feel the government's ignorance when It comes to their decision-making not because
they have the authority to control and implement rules and regulations instead we should also be
considerate in hearing the opinions and perspectives of citizens and with this kind of action, it
helps build more efficiency and responsive democratic system. Public involvement has its role in
building a stronger nation. Since public involvement encourages cooperation and partnership, it
creates a stronger community bond, improved governance, empowered citizens, and better
inclusive decision-making, which will result in a progressive nation.
There is a lot of current system impact on the economy like poverty rate, and the country
faces global challenges such as high commodity prices and higher for longer global interest rates.
In my own understanding, a different form of government can help with its beneficial
development but it has pros and cons and suitability relies on socio-political contexts, if we
expand our understanding of this kind of situation there are potential benefits like reduced
corruption, promoted stability, and improved governance. Yes, it fairly represents all regions of
the Philippines because each region has representatives in Congress, ensuring national-level
representation and allowing regions to manage their own affairs. The federal government system
can address regional concerns, especially the place of Mindanao known for its local
determination to address its problems based on its own geographic, cultural, social, and
economic conditions, regardless of their state and local government often have a far greater
impact on people’s lives than the federal government. I don’t think that the current presidential
system fosters good leadership and holds leaders accountable for their actions, as it seems one of
the major concerns is the lack of clarity on his platform and policies, which has left many
Filipinos guessing about his plan for the country. The parliamentary system can change
leadership dynamics through their action and voices, it would promote collective responsibility
since they are the head of the government. This means the government would be more
transparent and responsive to the needs of the people.
Through various institutions, laws, and initiatives here is the current system that maintains
peace and order in the country these have their strengths, addressing the challenges and
leveraging opportunities for improvement can further enhance peace and order in the Philippines.
Maybe it can be worsened when we do not choose a proper form of government on whom should
be deserving to be the head, to have the authority in governing the country. Prioritizing
inclusivity, accountability, and addressing the root causes of conflicts can improve the security
situation in the country and this should be the quality to improve the country.
In my perspective, Democracy is the best form of government because Liberal democracy,
provides a mechanism for some form of rule by proportionate representation, with citizens
empowered to bring about change through participation and persuade the powerful to act for the
greater good and this works best for the Philippines. Democracy has played a vital role in the
story of civilization, helping transform the world from power structures of monarchy, empire,
and conquest into popular rule, self-determination, and peaceful co-existence. The adaptation of
this government type could positively impact Filipino society in short benefits like improved
governance, enhanced accountability, and increased transparency. At the same time, the long-
term benefits are economic growth, social justice, peace and stability, institutional strengthening,
and environmental projection in this kind of implemented transition to a new government type
can bring significant benefits to Filipino Society.
To conclude, although every system of governance has its own set of strengths and
weaknesses, a democratic framework that includes aspects of federalism might be the most
suitable for the Philippines. This approach would enhance the power of local governments while
maintaining accountability and representation at the national level. Ultimately, the effectiveness
of any system relies on the dedication of both leaders and citizens to uphold democratic
principles and collaborate toward a fairer and more prosperous society.
