Introduction
Extracurricular activities encompass a range of pursuits outside the standard school

curriculum, including sports, community service, employment, the arts, and academic clubs.

Participation in these activities is believed to contribute to the overall development of an

individual. Many students engage in extracurriculars either because they enjoy them or to

present themselves as well-rounded individuals. However, these activities can also influence

academic performance, both in school assessments and in external examinations like the

Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) and Caribbean Advanced Proficiency

Examinations (CAPE). This study seeks to compare the CSEC academic performance of

students who are involved in extracurricular activities with those who are not.

3
Method of Data Collection
30 questionnaires were distributed digitally to students of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines

Community College.Questionnaires were used to determine the correlation between academic

performance and participation in extracurricular activities. They gathered the number of

extracurricular activities done by a student, the hours spent on them, and students' CSEC grades

in English, Mathematics, Science, and Foreign Language.

Figure 1 shows whether respondents participated in extracurricular activities in secondary school

with twenty one (21) respondents participating in extracurricular activities and nine (9)

respondents not engaging in extracurricular activities. It can therefore be said that majority of

respondents participated in extracurricular activities in secondary school.

Figure 2 shows the number of extracurricular activities done by respondents in secondary school,

nine (9) respondents did not participate in any extracurricular activities, ten (10) respondents

participated in one (1) extracurricular activity, six(6) respondents participated in two(2)

extracurricular activities and five (5) respondents participated in three (3) extracurricular

activities in secondary school. Therefore it can be concluded that majority of respondents

participated in zero to one extracurricular activity.

Figure 3 shows the number of hours a week respondents spent participating in extracurricular

activities with nine (9) respondents spending no hours participating in extracurricular activities

weekly, three (3) respondents spending two (2) hours participating in extracurricular activities

weekly, four (4) respondents spending three (3) hours participating in extracurricular activities

weekly, two (2) respondents spending four (4) hours participating in extracurricular activities

weekly , one(1) respondent spending five (5) hours participating in extracurricular activities

weekly, five (5) respondents spending six (6) hours participating in extracurricular activities

weekly, three (3) respondents spending eight (8) hours participating in extracurricular activities

weekly,one(1) respondent spending nine (9) hours participating in extracurricular activities

weekly and two (2) respondents spending ten (10) hours participating in extracurricular activities

weekly. Therefore it can be concluded that majority of respondents spent no hours participating in

extracurricular activities.

12
Figure 4 shows the grades received by respondents for csec english, twenty one (21) respondents

had received a grade II for english whereas the remaining nine (9) received a grade I.Therefore it

can be said that majority of students received a grade II for CSEC English.

Figure 5 shows the grades received by respondents for csec mathematics,three(3) respondents

received a grade I,eight(8) respondents receiving a II,seven (7) respondents receiving a grade III

and the remaining twelve (12) received a grade IV.Therefore,it can be said that majority of

respondents received a grade IV for CSEC Mathematics.

Figure 6 shows the grades received by respondents for any CSEC Science,eight(8) respondents

received a grade I,fourteen(14) respondents receiving a II,four (4) respondents receiving a grade

III, three (3) students receiving a grade IV and one (1) student receiving a grade V.Therefore it

can be concluded that majority of students received a grade II for a CSEC Science.

Figure 7 shows the grades received by respondents for any CSEC Foreign Language ,three(3)

respondents received a grade I,six(6) respondents receiving a II, ten (10) respondents receiving a

grade III, six (6) students receiving a grade IV and five (5) students receiving a grade

V.Therefore it can be concluded that majority of students received a grade III for any CSEC
