SECTION IV: READING COMPREHENSION
Read the text and answer the questions.
Every country has its own customs when it comes to food. Here are a few of the stranger
customs around food.
In China, it is considered wrong to stick your chopsticks upright in your rice or noodles. This
symbolizes a meal for the dead. It is also rude to point your chopsticks at another person, or to tap them
on the rim of your bowl or plate.
In Thailand, you should never stick your fork in your mouth. Eating from your fork is considered
rude and low-class. The fork is there to push the food on to your spoon.
In Japan, slurping your noodles is considered a compliment and it is encouraged. It is even
thought to make the food taste better and is believed to show others that you truly enjoyed your meal.
In Middle-Eastern countries, you only take and eat food with your right hand. Your left hand is
considered unclean and using it to eat is thought to be a terrible insult to your hosts.
Cleaning off all the food on your plate is seen as a compliment in Japan and India, but in China it
is seen as impolite. You are saying that you didn’t get enough to eat, so you should leave a small piece
of food uneaten on your plate.
