Skills I’ve
learned

Kacper Krawczyk
What skills I’ve learned in this subject

Cutting
Chiselling
Finishing
Sketching
Marking
Designing
Jointing
Cutting

I’ve learned to make all different kinds of cuts with a variety of

different saws such as making different shapes and designs using a
dovetail/tenon saw in combination with the coping saw.
I have also learned the safety when using a saw which include never
touching the blade.
There are also some techniques that I’ve learned which include
using the boxer stance for easier cuts as your arm has full range of
motion
Chiselling

I have learned how to use different types of chisels such as the bevel
edged chisel and mortise chisel in combination with a mallet to
create markings or trenches as well as taking off excessive or rough
timber
I have learned to clear/hollow out the inside of a timber block using
a mortise chisel
Finishing

I have learned how to finish my projects by filing, sanding or planing

them with a jack plane go get a smooth finish
I’ve also learned how to apply clear varnish and/or paint to my
projects to make them look more attractive
Sketching

I’ve learned how to sketch in isometric, oblique and perspective

views with all tools as well as learning how to free hand sketch
different shapes and tools we’ve used in our past projects
Marking

I’ve learned how to accurately mark my project using steel rulers, try

squares and
I’ve also learned how to setup and use a marking gauge for marking
out areas you couldn’t reach with a pencil and ruler such as round
surfaces
Designing

I have learned to create design patterns on my project using a pencil

and then transferring that design from pencil marks to a burnt on
design using a pyrography pen
Jointing

I have learned to make dovetail joints using a variety of tools including the
dovetail marker,ruler,try square,dovetail saw,coping saw and chisels
Past projects
Race car (1st year)

The race car was the first

project I made but it was an
easy project that I didn’t
make many mistakes on
I could improve my jack
planing skills as I jacked the
front unevenly causing the
front to the left side to be
lower than the right
Tools I used for this project
Race car

Steel ruler-for marking and measuring most of the project

Marking gauge- for marking the middle section of the car
Try square-for easier and straighter marking than the ruler
Chisel-creating the seat or trench of the car
Mallet-used in combination with the chisel
Pillar drill-for creating the space in which the wheels will be placed
Jack plane-to create the front and back sections of the car
File-to make the spoiler of the car
Pyrography pen-to add design to the car
Photo frame (2nd
year)

The photo frame was the

first project I made in 2nd
year and the project in which
I made the most mistakes
The very first mistake I made
was the joints,which I made
either too loose or just ugly
and uneven giving me the
idea that I have to improve
on making my joints fit
properly and making them
look flush and attractive
Tools I used for this project
Photo frame

Steel Ruler-for measuring and marking the pieces

Marking gauge-for marking the trenches/joints of the project
Try square-for straighter marking than the ruler
Tenon saw-to cut the vertical part of the trenches/joints
Chisel-to get rid of the excess wood from the trenches in order to create the joints
Mallet-used in combination with the chisel
Coping saw-to cut the ends of the pieces in order to create the design
File-to smoothen the project and to make the joints fit
Pyrography pen-for design
Snowman (2nd year)

The snowman project was a

project I created after
finishing the photo frame
and before Christmas
The mistake I made for this
project was not making the
snowman more round with
the use of the lathe
Tools I used for this project
Snowman

Tenon saw-to cut the cross in the hat for easy fitting on the lathe
Ruler-measuring and marking
Marking gauge for marking the round surface of the snowman
Lathe-to create the actual shape of the snowman
Desk organiser (2nd
year)

The desk organiser is the

last project I made in 2nd
year and is the project I done
best on
I could however improve it
with making my dovetail
joints fit more flush so they’d
look attractive, as well as
making the phone holder
more loose for easier fitting
and easier access
Tools I used for this project
Desk organiser

Steel ruler-for measuring and marking

Try square-for marking more accurately than the ruler
Tenon saw-to cut relief cuts into certain parts of the project
Dovetail saw-
Coping saw-for the curved cuts
Chisels-bevel edged chisel to create the trench for the divider and remove
excess wood from the dovetail joint areas, mortise for the phone holder
Mallet-used in combination with the chisel
Tools
Tenon saw
Coping saw
Try square
Chisel
Mallet
File
