WHO WAS MAHARANI
LAKSHMI BAI ?
• The fearless queen of Jhansi ,Rani Lakshmi Bai was
  one of the leading figures of the 1857 war of
  independence.
• Born on 19 November 1828 in Varanasi as
  Manikarnika Tambe , she grew up to become an icon
  for the freedom struggle against British rule in
  India
                        EARLY LIFE
• Rani Lakshmi Bai was Born as
 Manikarnika Tambe on November
 19,1828 in Marathi Karhada
 Brahmin family to Moropant
 Tambe (father) and Bhagirathi
 sapre (mother).
• Lakshmi Bai,s mother died when
 she was 4 years old . Her father
 worked for Peshwa Baji Rao of
 Bithoor district .
PERSONAL LIFE
. In May 1842 , Manikarnika was married to
Gangadhar Rao Newalkar (Maharaja of Jhansi )
and was later names as Lakshmi Bai as per the
traditions .
. In 1851 , Lakshmi Bai gave birth to her son
Damodar Rao who died after 4 months . The
couple later adopted Gangadhar Rao,s cousin
who was renamed Damodar Rao .The procedure
of adaptation was carried out in the presence of
British officer .
. A Letter was handed to the officer from the
Maharaja with the instructions that the adopted
child should be given due respect and Jhansi
should be given to Lakshmi Bai for her entire
lifetime.
  REVOLT OF 1857
1. Many factors led to the revolt of 1857 but the main
factor was the introduction of greased cartridges by the
East India company.
2. The sepoys had to bite of the new Enfield rifle by their
teeth .This was unacceptable to soldiers as the cartridges
were greased with the beef and pork .Shocked at the
brithsers attempt to taint their religion ,the soldier’s joined
the hands in the collective mutiny .
3. It is believed that Prior to sepoy mutiny , Lakshmi Bai
was unwilling to rebel against the British But changed
her mind in 1858 When commanding officer of the British
Forces, sir Hugh Rose demanded the surrender of Jhansi.
.Rani lakshmi bai was determined to not give up on the dominion of
Jhansi and hence started assembly an army of rebellions, including
women. She was supported by Tantia Tope and Nana sahib.
. Lakshmi Bai gave a great fight to the British as the siege of Jhansi
lasted for about two weeks.
. After the fierce war , when the British army entered Jhansi , Rani
lakshmi bai,tied her son Damodar Rao to her back and fought
bravely using two swords in both her hands.
. She escaped to kalpi and was accompanied by other rebellions. She
then departed to Gwalior and a fierce battle was fought between
British and Lakshmi Bai,s army.
. She died on June 17,1958 martying her life for india,s freedom.
