Abstract
Background: Mental health challenges increasingly affect diverse populations globally,
necessitating effective psychiatric rehabilitation to promote functional recovery and
community integration.

Aims: This study aims to review contemporary practices and policies that advocate for the
rights of individuals with psychiatric disabilities, emphasizing the formation of an integrative
model that incorporates principles of inclusion and equity.

Methods: A systematic review of literature was conducted, utilizing the PICOS model to
frame the research questions. This approach will focus on case studies and innovative
programs such as community-based rehabilitation initiatives and peer support networks,
while examining the transformative impact of mental health care acts specifically the Mental
Healthcare Act (MHCA) 2017 in India on rights- based frameworks. The advocacy efforts
surrounding this act will be highlighted to illustrate how it aims to improve the identification
and enforcement of mental health rights.

Results: The proposed integrative model emphasizes culturally appropriate understandings of

recovery, ensuring that rehabilitation practices resonate with the unique cultural contexts of
diverse populations. Findings illustrate how these models can dismantle barriers faced by
marginalized groups, highlighting the importance of legal and policy reforms in enhancing
access to care. The MHCA 2017 is particularly significant for its advocacy for rights such as
access to mental health services, community living, protection from discrimination, and legal
aid. Recent advocacy efforts have sought to strengthen these rights by expanding access to
Independent Mental Health Advocates (IMHAs) for all patients, including voluntary ones,
thereby ensuring that individuals are better informed about their rights and supported in their
treatment decisions.

Conclusion: The findings underscore the necessity for collaborative efforts among mental
health professionals, policymakers, and community organizations to create environments
where individuals can thrive beyond institutional settings. This paper advocates for a
transformative approach to psychiatric rehabilitation that not only addresses clinical needs
but also champions social justice and human rights for all individuals affected by mental
illness.
