PSYCHOANALYTIC THEORY

Learning Evaluation:

Directions: Using psychoanalytic theory, analyze the literary piece below. (20pts)

Literary Analysis

‘The Sick Rose’ was published in William Blake’s Songs of Experience in 1794.

The Sick Rose

O Rose thou art sick.

The invisible worm,
That flies in the night
In the howling storm:

Has found out thy bed

Of crimson joy:
And his dark secret love
Does thy life destroy.

Analysis:

This poem refers to author's feelings of longing for having intercourse. The rose in
this literary piece signifies woman, while invisible worm is an erect male genital organ.
This can be interpreted that an author is experiencing yearning desire of having
intercourse, as she is in the state of lust. However, once she follows her lust as she
does something to fulfill satisfactions for her yearning desire, it will result to changes in
reproductive system(losing of virginity) that might destroy her life.
