ONE THOUSAND AND ONE NIGHTS OR THE ARABIAN NIGHTS

 Arabian Nights known as One Thousand and One Nights.


 Constructed as a “frame story” to which all the other tales are subsequently
added.
 Collection of Middle Eastern and Southern Asian stories and folk tales
 Arabian tales were the fairy godmother of English novel.

 Author of Arabian Night is attributed to anonymous because these stories are
by numerous authors from a range of ethnic, geographic, and literary
traditions including Arabic, Persian, Egyptian, Mesopotamian, Jewish and
Indian

When was the One Thousand and One Night published?


 First published during the Islamic Golden Age.
 The first ten volumes which called The book of the Thousand nights and a
night were published in 1885 by Richard Francis Burton.
 His Supplemental Nights were published between 1886 and 1888 as six
volumes.
 Later pirate copies split the very large third volume into two volumes.

How many stories are there in the Arabian Nights?


 The original collection only contained about 40 stories
 While various versions and many new editions have expanded the number of
tales, the original Persian version of the 9 th-century only had around 200
tales.
