STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
I am Akhmal Shahan Abdul Jaleel and I am from the city of spices, Kozhikode, also Known as
Calicut, a city in the southern Indian state of Kerala, India. I was born on 27th July 1996, and I
have been living here since childhood.
During my high school education I have a keen interest in Physics and Mathematics which urged
the need to choose engineering as my profession. After completing my higher secondary
education, I decided to attain a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. By securing good
rank in the engineering entrance examination of Kerala state in India, which was taken by more
than hundred thousands of students, I got admitted to Government College of Engineering
Kannur (GCEK), a reputed engineering college affiliated under APJ Abdul Kalam Technological
University in 2015. My undergraduate (UG) program made significant changes in my life and I
feel really happy for the time that I have spent in the program.
My major project during final semester was done in the field of Biogas production. Which
address the solution for proper waste management without causing any environmental issues, it
was titled “Estimation of Theoretical Biogas Potential for Government College of Engineering
Kannur and Design of Biogas Digester”. Since waste-to-energy is a promising technology, it
simultaneously addresses issues related to non-renewable energy production and waste
management. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the biogas potential of our college and
the design of a biogas digester, which is an initial step towards establishing a biogas plant in the
backyard of the hostel. A food waste sample was collected from the sources and tested,
characteristics of waste is determined, from which estimation of the theoretical biogas potential
and design of biogas digester has been done.
During my Bachelors in the field of Mechanical Engineering I have undertaken various courses
like Heat and Mass transfer, Fluid Mechanics, Advanced Energy Engineering and Engineering
Management. Which had introduced me to various theoretical concepts and methods which are
widely used in oil and gas industry. After graduating in July 2019, I cleared national level
selection process conducted by HPCL (Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited) which is an
Indian oil and natural gas company with its headquarters at Mumbai, Maharashtra. The company
is ranked 367th on Future Global 500 list. Since January 2020, I have been working as a Field
Engineer in UCSPL (Uran-Chakan-Shikrapur LPG Pipeline) project. While working as a field
engineer I have familiarized with the field equipment and assisted in the measurement of field
data. I always tried to help my teammates whenever they are in need and have resolved conflicts
between them.
It is my ambition to develop myself as a well-trained process safety engineer and establish an
advanced technical career in the oil and gas industry. I have also achieved Level 1 Well Control
Awareness certification provided by International Well Control Forum (IWCF). My decision to
apply for M.S. in Process Safety and Environmental Engineering was not a quick decision. It
has been built over a long time with deep thinking and continuous sought. It started when I
attended an online course, during which we were discussing about various case studies on
catastrophic oilfield exploration incidents such as Santa Barbara blowout, Montara blowout,
Macondo blowout and so on. The devastation of these incidents and more than 150 workers lost
their lives when these incidents could have been prevented if process safety requirements were
followed. It took my interest to further my knowledge in Industrial Safety. I wish to pursue my
graduate studies at your esteemed institution, as I believe that the master degree program in
Process Safety and Environmental Engineering will help me to realize my ultimate goal, which is
to develop myself as a well trained process safety engineer and establish an advanced technical
career in the oil and gas industry. Thus the M.S.in Process Safety Engineering program at your
respected university not only a tailor-fit for my personal interest, but serves the future strategic
plans of my country.
However, maintaining my academic life, I actively participated in all the cultural and sport
activities on campus both as a participant and as a host. I have achieved first place in the APJ
Abdul Kalam Technological University F zone inter collegiate Chess tournament held
during 2016-17. Also, I have organized a multitude of workshops and events as part of various
organizations such as Indian Society for Technical Education (ISTE) and Mechanical
Association of the college. One of the qualities of mine has been to attempt to go deep in any
problem that requires a good amount of time. Nonetheless, I found this quality worthwhile to
perform well in practical courses which were full of operations, calculation, and designing. I am
working on it while preserving my appetite to go into the very detail of the problem. I believe it
will furnish me with a solid blend of insightful attributes.
When I thought of studying overseas, my first choice was Germany as the education in Germany
is of consistently excellent standards, and the tuition fee is comparatively less. Germany is surely
one of the most beautiful countries in Europe. A rich historical heritage, natural wonders and
modern metropolises make Germany an ideal tourism destination. For the international students,
it gives them an opportunity to enjoy Europe at its finest while studying at university.
In addition, I am sure that exposure to cutting edge facilities, interaction with renowned faculty
at your institution will help to develop my knowledge and versatility and help me to face stiff
global competition. It would be a great privilege to be able to do my graduate studies at Otto
Von Guericke University Magdeburg (OVGU), and I am quite confident that I will match the
high standards set by your university.
