Sandpaper Numerals
Invite- now you know the names of all the number rods. Today I am going to show you the
symbol that we can trace for the numbers.
Materials
Sandpaper numerals from 0-9 on boards
Direct Aim
Learning the symbols for the numbers already known
Indirect Aim
Preparation for writing
Presentation
1. Invite the child
2. Introduce the materials on the shelf
3. Let the child bring a chowki and a small mat to the area of presentation
4. Bring the sandpaper numerals and sensitizing tray along with the child to the area of
presentation
5. Sensitize your fingertips and let the child do the same
6. Remove three contrasting numbers from the box, one at a time
7. Trace each one of them as you name them , taking in the sensation of the numeral
8. Let the child trace after you
9. Give the three period lesson to the child
10. In the second period, emphasize on tracing and feeling the numeral
11. Once done, invite the child to continue tracing for as long as he is interested
12. Tell the child that there are some more numbers in the box, you will show how to
trace them at a later date
Note
The remaining number rods are introduced to the child in a similar manner via a 3 period
Lesson
Exercise 1 Writing numbers
1. Encourage the children to trace and write the numerals on a slate with chalk
2. This is done one at a time and not immediately after the presentation
3. Once the child is confident in writing, gradually introduce him to the squared paper
and writing with a pencil
