are necessary to enter the plant.
• Wednesday I was taken to plant and introduced to different
departments.
• Thursday As introductory week I was given tour of all the different
plants that make fertilizer such as Urea, CAN, NP Plants
• Friday, I went to Ammonia, Nitric Acid and LCO2 Plants. These
are immediate plants as their Products are further used by other plants to
make final product which is fertilizer.
WEEK 2 (Date: 08/08/2023 to 07/14/23

Set Goals and tasks: Spend the week in AIMS (Asset Integrity Management)
Department) Department and learn different techniques.
• Monday Introduced to Different domains including machine health
monitoring and Inspection department.

GIK Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology - FME 2

• Tuesday Utilized CSI 2140 analyzer to monitor health of PM (Pump-
Motor), Compressor, PT(Pump-Turbine), Gear Boxes and other rotary
equipment.
• Wednesday Collected vibration data and entering it in to excel.
• Thursday This Include Calibrating it to measure peak values and
measuring Frequency at which it occurs by Fourier Transform.
• Friday Further analyzing and comparing it with standard ISO
10816 charts to check for any issue especially to avoid any possible
Resonance.
WEEK 3 (Date: 08/14/2023 to 07/21/23)

Set Goals and tasks: Spend week at inspection department. Learned about
different inspection techniques that occur at Fatima fertilizer plant.
• Monday Carried out Various NDT (Non-Destructive Testing)
Techniques.
• Tuesday The NDT techniques included Visual Testing, PT, DPT,
UT, MPT and RT testing to check different parts including heat
exchangers, drums, and other non-rotating parts.
• Wednesday Carried out Rockwell and Brinell hardness testing.
Performed the test on different samples and recorded the average values
in Hb.
• Thursday Managed file organization, including spreadsheets and
inspection certificates, with a focus on MTRs (Material Test Reports).
• Friday Utilized and learned about different inspection techniques.
WEEK 4 (Date: 08/22/2023 to 07/29/23)

gearboxes, motors, and heat exchangers.
• Tuesday Checked for Misalignment in Pump-Motor including
parallel, Angular and Radia.
• Wednesday This included rim faced and reverse dial indicator methods.
• Thursday Visited the Gas turbines Plant. It has Power Generation of
about 56 KW by using Gas Turbines to provide electricity to Township.
• Friday Visted the L &DC Department.

WEEK 5 (Date: 08/30/2023 to 09/05/23)

Set Goals and tasks:
Was assigned to read about different maintenance techniques.
• Monday Learnt about different types of pumps in the plant and their
main modes of failure and how to trouble shoot them and fix the
problem.
• Tuesday Went to Electrical Department in the maintenance and learnt
about different types of motors and how to trouble shoot them,
• Wednesday Learnt about different types of bearings and studied their
modes of failure. Also learnt about different seals and lubrication
systems present in pumps and compressors.
• Thursday: Studied Pump Characteristic curves to deduce flow rate,
head, NPSH and other characteristics of pump. Also learnt about
different types of turbines and use of governors in them.
• Friday Learnt about maintenance of steam turbines and multistage
compressor and how to troubleshoot it.

Additional Student Comments:

1. How well do you feel your goals were met and what major skills were improved?
I learnt a great deal at my one-month time at Fatima Fertilizer. I learnt about my
different departments and how they coordinate with one another to work as company.
As a mechanical Intern it was great learning experience to apply my theoretical
knowledge learnt in GIKI. My practical skills and communication skills were greatly
improved.
Do you have any suggestions for your supervisor/manager(s) and internship
program?
There should be more frequent visits to plant area.
