ACTIVE VOICE TO PASSIVE VOICE
1. Monaco was a little kingdom. It was known (know) for the gaming houses. These were
stopped (stop) by other countries in Europe but they were retained (retain) by the King of
Monaco.
2. A few years ago a murder was committed (commit). The case was tried (try) in the most
judicial manner. The criminal was sentenced (sentence) to death.
3. A murder was committed in Monaco. The Ministers were summoned and it was decided to
sentence the murderer for life and a guard was placed to look after him.
4. A crime was re ported to the Prince of Monaco. The Prince was amazed as there was a
murder which was committed in his kingdom for the first time. The Ministers were
summoned to discuss the matter.
5. The King of Monaco was looking over the accounts. A new item of expenditure was
noticed(notice) by him. In order to reduce the expenditure the guard was dismissed (dismiss)
and the criminal was asked (ask) to run away.
6. The kingdom neither had a guillotine nor an executioner. Therefore a council was
called(call). It was decided (decide) to write a letter to the French Government. The letter
was sent(send).
7. The ministers decided to address an inquiry to the French government to get a guillotine. The
letter was sent (send). The reply from the French was that a machine and an expert could       be
supplied(supply) for 16000 francs. The king thought it over that the people wouldn’t stand it.
Again a council was called (call) to settle the matter. After many meetings they decided to
approach the king of Italy.
8. The general was called (call). He was asked (ask) to find a soldier who would cut the man’s
head off. The general talked it over with the soldiers. But the soldiers said, “It is not a thing we
have been taught”. (have, teach).
9. The Council met again. The General was summoned(summon) and he was
   instructed(instruct) to ask his soldiers if they were prepared(prepare) to cut the criminal’s
   head off.
