8.2.6.3.1 The compressed air supply shall be from a source available at all times. NFPA 13 Edition
2019

8.2.6.3.2* The air supply shall have a capacity capable of restoring normal air pressure in the system
within 30 minutes. NFPA 13 Edition 2019

A.8.2.6.3.2 When a single compressor serves multiple dry pipe systems, the 30‐minute fill time is
based on the single largest system. NFPA 13 Edition 2019

The compressor size should be sized and selected to fill the system piping internal volume to a
pressure of 40 psi in a duration of 30 minutes.

There is basically one major method to size the air compressor as detailed below:

The required flow rate of the air compressor (Cubic feet per minute CFM) can be found from the
following equation:

Where: 𝑉 : Volume of the system calculated from table below.

𝑃 .: Required pressure for the system (NFPA 13 requires 40 psi)

𝑃 : Atmospheric pressure measured as 14.7 psi

𝑡 : Filling time of the system measured in minutes (NFPA 13 requires 30 Minutes)

7.48 : Conversion factor with units of Gallon/Cubic feet

𝑄 : Volume flow rate measured in (CFM)
