2
• Traffic congestion refers to the condition in which there is an
excessive amount of vehicles on roads or at intersections,
leading to a significant slowdown or halt in the flow of traffic.
• It occurs when the demand for transportation exceeds the
capacity of the road network , causing delays, longer travel
times, and reduced overall efficiency of transportation
systems.
• Traffic congestion commonly happens during peak travel
hours, in urban areas, or at locations with high concentrations
of vehicles.
3
CAUSES
• Inadequate Infrastructure :
Insufficient road capacity, poorly designed roadways, or lack of investment
in transportation infrastructure.
• Traffic Incidents :
Accidents, breakdowns, or other incidents disrupt the normal flow of traffic.
• Poor Traffic Management :
Inefficient traffic signal timings, lack of intelligent transportation systems,
and ineffective traffic management strategies.
• Distracted Driving :
Use of mobile phones, in-car entertainment systems, or other distractions.
• Population Growth and Urbanization :
Increasing population and urbanization lead to more vehicles on the road.
4
EFFECTS
• Increased Travel Time :
Longer time spent commuting due to slow-moving or standstill traffic.
• Fuel Wastage and Air Pollution :
Idling vehicles consume more fuel and contribute to air pollution.
• Stress and Frustration :
Congestion can lead to stress and frustration among drivers, affecting mental
well-being.
• Environmental Impact :
Increased emissions, noise pollution, and degradation of the local environment.
• Reduced Productivity :
Delays in transportation can lead to reduced productivity for businesses and
individuals.

These are the 10 most congested cities in the world

HOW TO REDUCE TRAFFIC CONGESTION IN CITIES
• Public Transportation :
Invest in and improve public transportation systems, such as buses,
subways, light rail, and commuter trains.
• Biking and Walking Infrastructure :
Develop and maintain safe and efficient biking and walking
infrastructure, including bike lanes, pedestrian pathways, and bike-sharing
programs.
• Traffic Management and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) :
Implement advanced traffic management systems to optimize traffic
flow and reduce congestion.Use technology, such as smart traffic lights,
variable message signs, and real-time traffic information, to improve
traffic efficiency.
• Road Infrastructure Improvement :
Invest in road infrastructure improvements, including expanding roads,
building new routes, and optimizing existing ones.

CONCLUSION
Making Scientific Plan
• Urban road congestion charge is a system engineer involving
government, public and industrial benefit. Charge plan should include
charge purpose, charge region as well as charge method. Each item
should be made clear and scientific and in accordance with the local
transportation condition and financial situation.
Developing Public Transportation
• Traffic congestion charge will promote citizen to use public
transportation. Firstly, the network of public transportation must be able
to satisfy people’s request for transportation accessibility, conveniences
and comfort , so on in order to attract more people to take public
transportation instead of car journey to reduce traffic congestion.
