In einem Bächlein helle,

In a little-brook clear,

Da schoss in froher Eil


    
there shot in happy haste

Die launische Forelle

a capricious trout:

Vorüber wie ein Pfeil.

past like an arrow.

Ich stand an dem Gestade


    
I stood on the bank

Und sah in süßer Ruh


    
and watched with sweet contentment

Des muntern Fischleins Bade

Meist fehlt ihr nur aus Mangel


     
Mostly lack you only on-a lack

der Klugheit, Mädchen, seht


   
of cleverness, maidens, see

Verführer mit der Angel!


   

Sonst blutet ihr zu spät!
