Tools and Equipment for Planting Trees and Fruit-Bearing Trees

Orchard tools and equipment play a very important role in systematic process
of plant propagation. Their availability makes the work easier and helps in the proper
execution of the different procedures.

SCIENTIFIC WAYS OF PROPAGATING TREES AND FRUIT-BEARING TREES

1. T-BUDDING
The mature from scion is attached to another plant of the same family, which
eventually produces a sprout to form a new plant.
Demonstration
Example of type of plant for this method: Pomelo and Calamansi Trees.
Tools and Materials
 Cutter/Grafting knife
 Cellophane
 PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) Apron, Hand glove, working attire
Procedure
1. Wear your PPE
2. Prepare the tools and materials needed
3. Remove the lateral bud from the scion using the cutter
4. Make an inverted T slice on the bark of another plant. Insert the bud, and the
tie it firmly but leave the bud exposed.
5. Immediately and quick process of budding should be done because buds easily
dry up.
6. Union may take about 15 days or more. The inserted bud will remain green or
brownish depending on its natural color. You will know if the union is
unsuccessful if the bud turns black rots.

2. CLEFT-GRAFTING Photo Courtesy by: https://www.pinterest.ph/
Demonstration
Example of type of plant for this method: Mango and Apple Trees
Tools and Materials
 Grafting knife/ cutter
 Pruning shears
 Scion obtains from mature plant
 Stock a mature seedling
 Cellophane
 PPE
Procedure
1. Wear you PPE
2. Prepare all the tools and materials needed.
3. Clean the rootstock. Create a split about six inches down. Leave the wedge or
other similar tool to hold open the cleft center.
4. Make long tapering wedge on the base of each scion to fit into the cleft.
5. Insert the scions deeply so that their wedge bottoms are completely embedded.
One scion should be on each side of the cleft. The cambia of the scions and
rootstock must be aligned and in maximum contact to ensure union.
6. Once the scions are properly inserted and aligned, carefully remove the wedge
holding the cleft open. Seal the unions with wax or soil to prevent drying.
7. If the scion survives, only the stronger, healthier one is kept and the other is
remove.

3. MARCOTTING
Demonstration
Example type of plant for this method: Citrus Trees
Tools and Materials
 Sphagnum moss/ coconut husk
 Cutter/grafting knife
 Cellophane
 Tie
 Small basin
 Water
 PPE
Procedure:
1. Wear your PPE

Quarter 2- Week 4
2. Prepare the tools and materials needed.
3. Use tools according to each function
4. Soak the sphagnum moss/ coconut husk in a basin of water
5. Use the tie to measure the circumference of the stem. The length from the
measured circumference is now the basis of cut to be made.
6. Make a horizontal cut using the cutter and then perform rounded cut from the
top to bottom in both ends of the first cut.
7. Carefully remove the bark with your hand.
8. Using the cutter, scrape the cambium layer. This is the slimy secretion
responsible for preparing the wounded plant parts.
9. Place the sphagnum moss or coconut husk to scraped area then wrap it with
cellophane.

HEALTH AND SAFETY MEASURES IN PROPAGATING TREES AND FRUIT-

BEARING TREES
1. Before working, make sure you take a bath in order to work well.
2. Always wear complete personal protective equipment which includes hair
net, hand gloves, apron, boots if needed, protective eye glass, and face
mask.
3. Make sure tools and equipment are working properly before using them.
4. Always follow instructions for the use of equipment.
5. Focus on the work at hand. Do not allow yourself to get distracted.
6. Know your limits in working; seek help whenever necessary.
7. Work in proper position. Make sure you do not strain your back while
working.

Activity 1: Find me at your home

Direction: On your notebook list down the tools and equipment that you can
find in your home or garden. Identify the tools and equipment that are available at
your home write it’s uses. Follow the format below

Activity 2: Try me
Direction: Each student will practice the different methods of propagation. Follow the
instructions carefully, with the guidance of your teacher/ facilitator or guardian. Take
a picture of every procedure and pass it to the teacher.

Activity 3: Safety first

Direction: Choose a safety measure in propagating trees and fruit-bearing trees and
draw it in a short bond paper and present it to your facilitator/guardian.

In propagating fruit-bearing trees, remember the following:

1.Select a stem which is not too young or too old.
2. Be sure the propagating materials are of the same species.
3. See to it that the stock and the scion are fitted with each other.
4. Do the propagation at the right time.
5. Always observe the health and safety measures of plant propagation.

Direction: Answer the following in one or more sentences in a piece of paper.

1. Why we need to identify the uses and functions of every tools in plant propagation?
2. What are the scientific methods of plant propagation?
3. Why it’s important to follow the step by step procedures of scientific methods of
plant propagation?
4. Why do we need to follow the safety measures of plant propagation?
