Animal raising is one of the

sources of livelihood of many
Filipino families today. It can be
done in one’s backyard or in a small lot nearby.

Raising Four-Legged Animals

1. Pigs - are domesticated or commercially produced. They are

raised for pork meat and various purposes (e.g. lechon)

2. Cows- are raised for meat, dairy and as draught animals (pulling
carts, plowing)

3. Goats- are easy to raise and resistant to diseases. They eat grass
and plants and do not require spaces. 4
Raising Fish

1. Milkfish or Bangus - is a bright and silver-colored fish species that can be raised
in brackish or saltwater ponds and in marine water fish pens. It is
the National fish of the country.

2. Tilapia - is raised in farmed-cultured ponds usually grown in

freshwater.

cat’s whiskers around its mouth. It can live for a long time out of
water, like during droughts.

4. Carp - is one of the most farmed fish out of the many

ornamental fish species.

Here are some Hazards that need important attention:

1. Be careful when vaccinating, giving medications or drawing blood from

animals. Animals move a lot and may slip the needle in the process.

2. Wear protective attire to avoid infections and diseases. Examples are

ascariasis, animal influenza, scabies, ringworm, salmonellosis, etc.

3. Put on ear plugs or earmuffs to reduce exposure to loud noises.

4. Use rubberized gloves when working or repairing damaged cords or light

sockets and equipment to avoid electric shocks.

Health and Safety Practices

 Practice good management in breeding and feeding to prevent pests and

diseases.

 Comply with complete sanitation and precautionary measures (e.g., clean at

all times, follow good feeding methods and vaccinate or immunize the animals
before sickness or diseases strikes)

 Select and isolate sick animals. Give them medicines as soon as possible.

 Build strong fences to prevent pests and other animals.

 Refrain from overcrowding the animals.

 Always provide suitable shelter with proper lighting and ventilation.

 Remove fishes’ eggs using a scoop net. Use wire trap nets to catch adult
amphibians.

 Always clean the swamps and grassy areas near the pond to keep them from
multiplying.

 Drain the pond and treat this with quicklime.

Market Demands for Animal Products

Live animals and their by-products are sold and transported to the market, either
alive or frozen.

To be more successful in this field, consider the following:

1. Sell the products fresh, carefully sorted and packed, and quality controlled.

2. Sell during peak season and area when there is high demand.

3. Sell directly to the consumer or processor for more profit.

4. Consider cost of transportation to adjust profits.

5. Promote and advertise the products continuously. Use the internet.

You can choose between these marketing strategies:

1. Direct Selling is marketing products or services to consumers. It guarantees the

biggest earnings because all expenses of commission and extra handling are cut
out.
