Module # 7

1. Being a Dominican- OP SIENA students and a future missionary catechist, what do you
think will be the potential of SOCSARGEN in terms of the following?
TOURISM
The potential of SOCSARGEN in terms of tourism are, there’s a lot of tourist destination in
Region 12. A place where I proud to have, White sand beaches, picturesque lakes, and thrilling
paragliding are not what would first come to mind when people think about the southernmost
provinces of the Philippines. But that is exactly what you will find when you explore the hidden
gems of Region 12.
One of the must-visit travel destinations in the region is Lake Sebu, known for its breathtaking
view. The area itself has a deep connection to the T’boli people and culture, preserving the
tribe’s native songs, dances, and practices – including the famous T’nalak weave.

Travelers also find adventure in the southernmost region of the country. River tubing in Pangi
River in Maitum, Sarangani is one popular highlight that never fails to draw in travelers looking
for that feeling of exhilaration.
Region 12 is also home to Gumasa beach. Not only is the long stretch of white sand coastline
travel-worthy all year round but it is also the site of the Lubi-Lubi and Mahin fests, and the
popular annual SarBay Festival, the largest beach party in Mindanao.

If you are lucky enough to be along Sarangani Bay at sunset, watching the sun go down on a
clear day may just be the highlight to a trip down south.

The region is home to many more must-see sites such as Asik-Asik Falls, the hot pools of Lake
Agco, and the historic Lagbasan Cave. There is also much more to experience, from paragliding
in Sarangani to taking the Gensan Tuna Tour; and from daring to ride the Seven Falls Zipline to
exploring the species at Baras Bird Sanctuary. There is so much to see, taste, and experience
across the southernmost provinces of the Philippines.
The Department of Tourism has supported the growth of the local cultural and travel scenes in
recent years with the Treasures of SOX Travel and Trade Expo, an event that showcases the
region to potential travelers and business investors.
MINERAL RESOURCES
There are about 19 types of soil found in the province of Cotabato. Mountain soils, which are
undifferentiated, are found at the eastern and western part of the province. Clay loam soil is
found in the municipalities of Carmen, Tulunan, Pigcawayan and Pikit while the municipalities
of Aleosan, Midsayap, Banisilan and part of Magpet, Pigcawayan and Pres. Roxas have a clay
type soil. Sandy clay loam soils characterize those in the Municipalities of Makilala and Mlang
and the City of Kidapawan. The most prevailing soil types in the province are of clay loam type.
These types are mostly found in the plains, which are best suited for intensive crops like corn,
rice and other permanent crops. Mineral products found in the province consist of non-metallic
products defined as limestone, sand and gravel, soil and white clay. The first three items are
considered as construction materials while the white clay is a good raw material for porcelain
production and considered as one of the best white clay resources in the country. It is
abundant in the municipalities of Banisilan, Pres. Roxas, Mlang, Makilala and Magpet
particularly in the barangays of Dolis, Inac and Nowa. The province has several ceramics
processing which are either unregistered or registered enterprises. Magpet Ceramics located at
Magpet, Cotabato is an LGU-managed enterprise that specializes in the making of pots and jars,
table wares, novelties and art wares.
BUSINESS AND AGRECULTURE
In 2002, SOCCSKSARGEN posted 330.6 thousand farms for agricultural use, covering 775.3
thousand hectares. The region's total agricultural land area comprised 39.9 percent of the
region's total land area. As the number of farms increased by 25.2 percent over the 264.1
thousand farms reported in 1991, the average farm size decreased from 2.8 hectares per farm
to 2.3 hectares per farm. Generally, the increase in the number of agricultural farms and
reduction in the farm size could be partly attributed to the distribution of land through the
Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program (CARP) of the government. About 87.9 percent of the
farms in the region had one to two parcels with an average parcel size of around 1.98 hectares
per parcel. Overall, the region reported an average of 1.9 parcels per farm in 2002.
Cotabato reported the highest number of farms, Corn was the major temporary crop in the
region, Pineapple was the dominant permanent crop in 2002, National irrigation system was
common in Soccsksargen, Hog raising dominated the livestock raising activity, Raising of chicken
was the primary poultry raising activity, A number of farms were also engaged in ornamental
and flower gardening.
The Economic Profile of Region 12 is categorized into four levels: One is the regional level which
tells us about the socio-economic situation of SOCCSKSARGEN as a region. Second is the
provincial level which will help us see the socio-economic situation of the four provinces of
SOCCSKSARGEN. Third is the city level and fourth is the municipal level which will help us take a
bird’s eye view of Region 12’s cities and municipalities respectively.
