Written Reflection: GBDA Assignment 1: Icon Creation
(link to moodboard via Padlet below)
While brainstorming ideas for what kind of icons I should create, I was listening to
music on my laptop through my air pods when they ran out of battery. I switched to my
headphones and used them instead, when I figured to just use these 3 objects for my
project instead. These objects mean a lot to me, as they are some of the items that I
use in my everyday life, and fell under the electronics category, which is why I found
them appropriate for use.
When sketching out the designs for both the laptop and the headphones, I found
it challenging to create an engaging sketch out of some angles (such as side views), as
they didn’t show the full functionality of my objects, or instead made my object look a lot
less “alive” in a sense. The side views of both the headphones and laptop both look like
thick “lines” more than showing the item, making for a great reference. I chose to move
forward with front-facing views for all my items, giving a sense of similarity and unison in
the icons.
I tried to use similar size brushes when translating the sketches onto illustrator,
and I find myself more comfortable using thicker lines to make for smoother line endings
and connections.
For color, I found a split-complimentary color palette which I referenced in my
mood board through google images. I used the 3 colours as background colours for my
icons, allowing the icons to stand in front of a color that acknowledges their features
more. To make the icons stand out further, I applied a blotch of color a layer above the
background that would contrast with itself, in a successful attempt at bringing out the
brighter colors featured in the icons.
Finally, many of the challenges I faced whilst making these icons were
encountered while trying to translate my sketches onto adobe illustrator, as I found
myself frustrated at using vectors rather than pixels on my first time. I am very used to
creating 2D animation(s) and drawings on pixel canvases, and using vectors and getting
used to illustrator was quite a hassle, and I am still doing my best to become fluent in
Adobe Illustrator.
Originally, my idea was to create all of my Icons in a ¾ angle, however after
encountering how challenging that may be using vectors, I decided it would be best to
make front-facing 2D views, as they would do a better job at translating into illustrator’s
vectors with ease rather than hassling to create depth in a manner that was both
unnecessary and sloppy. I am overall proud with how my Icons came out.
