Executive Summary:
Malawi faces significant challenges with food security, unemployment, and limited agricultural
diversification. Mushroom farming offers a promising solution, providing a nutrient-rich food
source that can enhance diets while creating income opportunities. Despite its potential,
mushroom farming in Malawi remains underdeveloped due to limited technical knowledge,
insufficient resources, and inadequate infrastructure, preventing many communities from tapping
into its benefits.
This proposal seeks funding to establish a small-scale mushroom farming business in Malawi.
The initiative will focus on cultivating oyster and button mushrooms using locally available
materials, with a goal of improving food security, creating employment opportunities, and
promoting sustainable agricultural practices. By using cost-effective methods and local
resources, the business aims to demonstrate a scalable and replicable model for mushroom
production.
The mushroom production business plans to leverage technological innovation and climate-
resilient practices to enhance productivity and sustainability. Vertical farming techniques and
climate-controlled grow rooms will optimize production efficiency, while renewable energy
sources and waste recycling will minimize environmental impact. These practices will ensure
consistent yields and improve resource efficiency.
The project is committed to job creation and inclusive growth, with a focus on empowering
women and youth. At least 50% of leadership roles will be held by women and youth, supported
by specialized training programs in mushroom farming and entrepreneurship. This approach not
only improves livelihoods but also fosters community resilience by equipping individuals with
essential skills for long-term success.
The business has strong financial and market potential, with plans to target both local and
regional markets, including Mozambique, Zambia, and Tanzania. The grant will fund
infrastructure development, training, and operational costs, with a projected break-even point
within 12 months and an estimated annual revenue of $50,000 within two years. This proposal
aligns closely with the SATCP's goals of innovation, sustainability, and inclusive economic
growth.
