Topic Multiplying two-digit numbers by one-digit numbers

Grade level: 4
Time: 60 minutes
Materials: Whiteboard, markers, multiplication flashcards, multiplication worksheets, pencils,
calculators
Learning Objectives;
1. Students will be able to multiply two-digit
2. numbers by one-digit numbers.
3. Students will be able to use various
4. strategies to solve multiplication problems.
5. Students will be able to check their answers using inverse operations.
Engage
Begin by showing students a multiplication flashcard with a two-digit number and a one-digit
number.
Ask students how they would solve this problem in their head. then record their strategies on the
board.

Explore (15 minutes):

Give each students multiplication worksheet with various two-digit by one-digit multiplication
problems.
Allow students to work on the problems independently or in pairs.

Explain (15 minutes):

Gather the class together and review the strategies for multiplying two-digit numbers by one-
digit numbers that were recorded during the Engage phase. Demonstrate how to solve a few of
the problems on the worksheet using different strategies (e.g. standard algorithm, expanded form,
area model). Emphasize the importance of checking their answer

Elaborate (20 minutes):

Divide the class into small groups and give each group a set of word problems
involving two-digit by one-digit multiplication. Instruct the groups to solve the problems
together and explain their reasoning to one another. Encourage the groups to use a variety of
strategies to solve the problems. Circulate around the room and offer guidance and support as
needed using inverse operations (division).

Evaluate (5 minutes):
Have each student solve a multiplication problem on the board using their chosen strategy.
Review the students' answers as a class and discuss any discrepancies or errors. Summarize the
lesson by emphasizing the importance of using different strategies to
solve problems and checking their answers using inverse operations.
