DIGITAL SELF
Among the Filipino youth, the use of digital technology
has now become part of the self-the digital self. The
digital self is the aspect of the self that is expressed or
shared with others through online interactions on the
Internet, specifically on social networking sites. On such
sites, users normally disclose personal information,
such as their name, age, birth date, address, and
contact details. Some users also provide very personal
information about themselves, such as their likes and
dislikes, hobbies, favorite food, favorite movies, places
they have visited, relationship status, thoughts and
feelings, and important events in their lives. This sharing
of personal information on social networking sites may
be related to the strong desire of adolescents for social
approval and acceptance. Similar can be said about
adults.
SELF-PRESENTATION
Acording to Delamater and Myers (2012) that the self is
heavily influenced by feedback from others. The impact of
others whom people interact with depends upon the
nature of one's relationship with them. The views of others
through online interactions (social networking) are so
important that they become part of the self. Personal
information that individuals disclose through online
interactions, which others judge favorably through "liking"
and "reacting," contributes to positive self-concepts.
Nevertheless, people is, to positive impressions in the
eyes of other people. Self-presentation try refers to an
individual's attempts, both conscious and unconscious, to
control how he or she projects himself or herself in social
interactions. Some forms of self-presentation may be
authentic, but some may be tactical or selective.
EXPRESSION OF GENDER AND SEXUALITY ONLINE

According to Ciccarelli & White, (2012), gender is defined as the psychological

identification of a person as masculine or feminine, while sexuality is defined as
the state of being sexual. These aspects influence people's self-perception and
their interactions with others, including how they are perceived by others.
Gender identity and sexuality often categorize individuals, particularly in various
forms of media, such as social media. The port trial of male and female
behaviors in media can affect the construction of appropriate sexual behaviors
of people, especially adolescence.
The internet and social networking sites have become crucial channels for the
dissemination of information about gender identity and sexuality. The
Psychological Association of the Philippines (PAP) is actively contributing by
providing scientific knowledge on the application of psychological theories to
benefit society and improve the lives of LGBTQ+ community members. The
PAP's online materials and publications address bias and discrimination, aiming
to uphold human rights and protect the dignity and equality of all persons. The
anti-discrimination act in the Philippines recognizes the role of
telecommunication and social media in protecting LGBTQ+ individuals from
discriminatory acts.
THE IMPORTANCE OF DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY

Technology is crucial for individual survival and

communication. Its importance is also growing
for societal advancement. According to the
Business Dictionary, technology is the
application of information in the design,
production, and utilization of goods and
services, and in the organization of human
activities. It has led to numerous
advancements, altering social dynamics and
dictating new ways for people to interact.
Computer and software technologies have
reached impressive levels.
The advancement of digital technology has significantly impacted various
aspects of daily life, education, health, and production industries. Digital
technology encompasses electronic devices and applications that utilize
numeric codes to process and transmit information. It has facilitated the
compression of large volumes of data into compact storage devices,
leading to efficient data transmission. Furthermore, innovations in mobile
phones have popularized internet usage and social networking,
revolutionizing communication and learning methods.
IMPACT OF ONLINE INTERACTIONS ON THE SELF

-In all of Southeast Asia, the Philippines has the fastest-

growing internet population. This is largely due to the fact
that most Filipinos, especially the younger generation, use
social networking sites primarily for communication,
information, and entertainment (Bristol et al., 2016; Estuar,
2003; Ignatius & Hechanova, 2014).

-According to Iqbal, Khan, and Malik (2017), mobile phones

are becoming an increasingly important aspect of today's
youths' daily lives. They enable users to stay in contact,
establish connections with others, and stay informed about
the whereabouts and activities of others.

There are advantages and disadvantages to using the

Internet. It can also strengthen relationships by facilitating
communication.
Social networking can be a valuable tool for discussions on national
issues, including political ones. It can also serve as a platform for people
to voice their needs, wants, and concerns.

However, identity theft, false information, and fake news can also spread
through social networking. Since most social networking site users prefer
to remain anonymous, this should be a serious concern, particularly for
teenagers who may not always use real names. Be fully aware of the
implications of disclosing personal information online, as it can be viewed
by anybody. Typically, they upload images and videos of their friends,
family, and themselves.

The church, schools, and government in the Philippines work hard to stop
and effectively manage the spread of identity theft, false information, and
fake news in the nation because adolescents are especially vulnerable to
cyberbullying, gossip, and stalking.
DATA PRIVACY ACT

The Philippines implemented Republic Act 10173, also known as the Data Privacy
Act of 2012, to safeguard the populace against the unauthorized theft of
personal information.
The Act states that:
- The state's policy is to uphold the fundamental human rights of communication
and privacy while allowing unrestricted information flow to spur development and
innovation.
- The State acknowledges the intrinsic responsibility it has to guarantee the
security and protection of personal data in information and communications
systems used by the public and commercial sectors, as well as the critical role
that technology plays in fostering national identity.
- In this context, "personal information" refers to any information, whether or not it
is recorded in a material form, from which the identity of a person is evident or
reasonably and directly ascertained by the entity holding the information, or
which, when combined with other information, would unquestionably and directly
identify a person.
LEARNING

Behaviorist defined learning as a relatively permanent

change in behavior as a result of practice or
experiences. cognitive psychologists define learning as
a process that leads to change as a result of
experience. In Other words, learning is the acquisition of
knowledge, skills, and attitudes through experience. It is
a transformational process that leads to personal
growth and development. Learning helps an individual
adapt to the constantly changing environment. It starts
at birth and continues throughout life. It is a constant
process that can result from direct and indirect
experiences. individuals learn from one other through
observation and imitation. Learning is important to the
survival of human beings because it enables them to
discover new knowledge, technology, and interventions.
WHAT HAPPENS IN THE BRAIN DURING LEARNING

Humans have the capacity to learn new skills and adapt to

new change throughout one's life which induce structural
and functional plasticity in the neural systems of the brain
(Galván, 2010) environments.

The process of neuroplasticity is the ability of the brain to

change throughout one's life. It involves the addition of new
neurons, new inter connection between neurons, and the
reorganization of information processing areas. The ability
of the brain to change happens in two ways, it can be
through an increase In the number of synapses between
neurons or a change in the function and structure of the
neurons.

METACOGNITION AND SELF-REGULATED LEARNING

Metacognition, as defined by psychologist John Flavell, involves

being aware of one's thinking and the strategies used for learning. It
consists of two components: metacognitive knowledge, which
includes understanding one's cognitive abilities and strategies for
completing tasks, and metacognitive regulation, which involves
monitoring and controlling cognitive processes.
Zimmerman (2002) defines self-regulated learning (SRL) as the
process in which students systematically direct their thoughts,
feelings, and actions towards the attainment of their academic
goals. It is a self-directed process through which students transform
their mental abilities into academic skills. SRL involves planning for a
task, monitoring performance, reflecting on the outcome, and using
these reflections to adjust and prepare for the next task. It is a
cyclical process that empowers students to take control of their
own learning and behavior.
GENERAL BENEFITS OF METACOGNITION AND
SELF REGULATION IN LEARNING

Increase students' knowledge and understanding of

different subject matters
Help students understand the kinds of information they
need to successfully solve a problem in school
Help students choose the most appropriate and useful
learning strategies to improve their learning capabilities
Help students organize daily tasks in school
Help students identify strengths and weaknesses in their
academic performance
Allow students to learn ideas from others, such as their
teachers and fellow students
Allow students to give and receive feedback in their own
thinking and performance
Develop students' autonomy and control
HOW TO DEVELOP METACOGNITIVE AND SELF
REGULATED LEARNING BEHAVIORS

Set your short-term and long term academic goals in your studies, Identify
the negative outcomes if you do not achieve your goals, as well as the
positive outcomes when you achieve them.
Make a self help plan to achieve your academic goals. Think of and select
strategies to achieve your goals, such as staying focused, avoiding
distractions, and developing skills to manage your time efficiently.
Monitor your academic performance and progress. Use a chart to monitor
your work outcomes. When faced with difficult tasks, seek social support
when you need it. Look for inspiration to keep you motivated in achieving
your academic goals. When confronted with difficulties, always think and
keep working towards your goals and the future.
Reflect on what you have learned and accomplished. Reflection helps you
develop your strengths and overcome your weaknesses.
