He hired 15 apprentices, trained them to
become watchmakers, and encouraged them
to specialise in certain fields such as the
production of pinions, mainspring barrels
and hands. In the years that followed, he
tirelessly evolved the craft of watchmaking
with his ideas. Among others, he introduced
the metric system and the Glashütte lathe
to watchmaking. After a development period
of 20 years, F. A. Lange used the three-quar-

T H E BEGI N N I NG OF
A NEW ER A.

On 7 December 1990, after a wait of more

than 40 years, a dream came true for Walter
Lange: he incorporated the company anew
and re-registered the A. Lange & Söhne
brand − 145 years to the day, after his great-
grandfather F. A. Lange had laid the cor-
nerstone for German precision watchmak-
ing in Glashütte.

Shortly after World War II, in 1948, the ex-

isting manufactory was nationalised. The
world-famous name disappeared from watch
dials − and A. Lange & Söhne became
a legend.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall, Walter Lange

seized the opportunity in 1990 to turn this
legend back into reality. He immediately
began to design and craft the first Lange
watches of the new era. As his great-grand-
father had done, he relied on the people of

Glashütte and embraced his vision to build

“the world’s finest watches”. The name
A. Lange & Söhne was impressively brought
back to mind in the horological commu-
nity with the watch collection developed
between 1990 and 1994. It consisted of the
SAXONIA, the TOURBILLON “Pour le
Mérite”, the ARKADE ladies’ watch − and
the LANGE 1.

More than 25 years later, an exceptional and

multi-faceted collection has grown from
the first four Lange watches of the new era,
and A. Lange & Söhne has established it-
self worldwide as one of the most exclusive
watch brands. This would never have been
possible without the pioneering spirit and
guidance of Walter Lange, who passed away
in 2017, and his horological partner Günter
Blümlein.

GRAND LANGE 1

True grandeur.
The brand-new GRAND LANGE 1 reflects A. Lange & Söhne’s ambition
to achieve ever-new milestones in horology. Its true grandeur comes to
the fore not only with a case diameter of 41.0 millimetres, but especially
in numerous remarkable details. This model, available in 18-carat pink
or white gold, excels with a reduced height of 8.2 millimetres. This allows
the watch to snugly embrace the wrist and fit under any cuff. The strict
asymmetry of the dial with the off-centre display of time, the Lange out-
size date and the UP/DOWN power-reserve indicator add extra appeal.

The proven manually wound calibre L095.1 powers this timepiece as well.
Due to the enlarged proportions relative to the LANGE 1 with hand arbors
slightly shifted outward, it respects the watch family’s design code down
to the smallest detail. Instead of the double barrel with two stacked main-
springs featured in the LANGE 1, it has only one mainspring barrel. But
thanks to the larger diameter, it also achieves a maximum power reserve
of 72 hours.

1815 RATTRAPANTE

Short-time measurement, technically superb.

The 1815 RATTRAPANTE comes in a limited edition of 200 watches in
platinum and is the first A. Lange & Söhne rattrapante chronograph that
is totally focused on the eponymous complication. It incorporates classic
design and engineering hallmarks and enables measurements of stopped
times up to 30 minutes, as well as intermediate and comparative time meas-
urements of up to 60 seconds. With a diameter of 41.2 millimetres, Lange’s
engineers succeeded in limiting the height of the case to 12.6 millimetres
despite the technical complexity of the calibre.

The noble chronograph is powered by the custom-made, manually crafted

manufacture calibre L101.2. In typical Lange fashion, all movement parts
are lavishly finished − a rarity in mechanical rattrapante chronographs. The
development of movements in the manufactory represents the drive that
allows A. Lange & Söhne to explore new horizons, resulting in the unique
design of the watch: instead of the usual positions at 3 and 9 o’clock, the
subsidiary seconds dial and the 30-minute counter are now arranged at
6 and 12 o’clock. Paired with the blued hands, this design feature assures
optimised legibility.

RICHARD LANGE MINUTE REPEATER

Beyond the classic minute repeater.

The RICHARD LANGE MINUTE REPEATER puts the focus on one
of the most elaborate sound functions with a minute repeater, classically
executed but contemporarily evolved. When the integrated slide is
actuated, the striking mechanism strikes the hours, the quarter hours,
and the minutes.

When the repeater is activated, the sapphire-crystal caseback reveals

how the polished gong hammers execute the respective sequence
of strikes on the two gongs that are wrapped around the movement.
A refined system of artistically choreographed racks, snails, levers
and wheels controls the 191-part mechanism. Additionally, the strike-
work has a pause elimination feature. It skips the otherwise common
pause between the hour and minute strike when no double tone must
be struck for the quarter hours in the first 14 minutes after the top
of the hour.

Our most experienced watchmakers meticulously tune each of the

50 limited-edition watches like a precious musical instrument. Thanks
to the newly developed L122.1 manufacture calibre, the three-part
enamel dial crafted in-house and a platinum case that is water-resis-
tant to 2 bar (20 metres), this masterpiece lives up to even the loftiest
expectations.

Fineness

In the carat system, the quality – or fineness – of precious metals is expressed in carat (karat is the preferred spelling
in the USA). The European system, based on one thousand weight units, is also commonplace. The two systems
correlate as follows:

18-carat gold is equivalent to 750/1000 gold,

21-carat gold is equivalent to 875/1000 gold,
and platinum is 950/1000 platinum.

There is a simple technical reason for the absence of pure gold and pure platinum in horology: both metals are too
“soft” for the production of watch and movement components. Gold and platinum are alloyed with other metals to
significantly increase their hardness. The different hues of pink, white and honey gold are also achieved by alloying.

Bearing jewels

The reference to “Rubine” on the plates of Lange movements applies to friction-reducing, wear-resistant functional
jewels consisting of synthetically produced ruby for bearings, switching and detent elements and the escapement.
Because of the greater homogeneity of the crystalline structure as opposed to natural ruby with otherwise virtually
identical physical and chemical properties, the use of synthetic ruby is very commonplace in watchmaking today.
The English equivalent of the German term “Rubine” is jewels.

Precious metals and jewels

As a certified member of the Responsible Jewellery Council, we guarantee that all of our precious metals and jewels
are responsibly sourced. Long-standing partnerships and meticulous evidence on all invoices from our suppliers
guarantee that the raw materials (diamonds, gold and platinum) used for our watches come from legitimate sources.
The quality of our diamonds is tested and certified by an independent laboratory.

Alligator leather

As a long-standing member of the International Reptile Leather Association (IRV), A. Lange & Söhne rigorously
abides by the Washington Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).
The alligator leather used for our straps is sourced exclusively from alligator farms in the USA.
