iLS Activity 1 (10 items x 10 points)
Chemical Bonding – Digital Activity
Directions:
       1) Access the Ionic and Covalent virtual laboratory through the following link:
             http://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/sugar-and-salt-solutions
        2) Conduct the experiments and answer the questions that follow.
        Part A
        In the Macro tab:
             1. Fill the container with water.
             2. Place the battery-bulb set-up in the water. (Do not submerge the battery in water)
             3. Choose sugar as a solute. Put a little at a time and observe the light emitted by the
                    bulb.
             4. Decrease the volume of the liquid by evaporating the water and observe changes
                    in the bulb.
             5. Repeat the steps above but choose salt as the solute.
             6. Complete the table:
                                                     Light emission Light emission
                             Solute: SALT
                                                      (2L of water) (250mL)

             7. Answer the following questions:
                    a. Differentiate the light bulb emissions when the different solutes are used.
                    b. What is the effect of decreasing the volume of water on the intensity of the
                       light source?

        Part B
        In the Micro tab:
        1) Fill the container with water.
        2) Choose a small amount of salt as a solute and observe the atoms when in contact with
             water.
        3) Evaporate the water until none is left in the container and observe the behavior of
             the atoms.
        4) Repeat the steps using sugar as the solute.
        5) Repeat the steps above but choose salt as the solute.
        6) Complete the table:
When dispersed in When all water is
                           Solute: SALT
                                                       water evaporated

When dispersed in When all water is
                          Solute: SUGAR
                                                       water evaporated

                           Description
        7) Answer the following questions:
             a. What is the difference between salt and sugar atoms when dispersed in water?
             b. Compare the salt atoms when in water and without water.
             c. What property differentiates the behavior of salt and sugar in water? What does
this explain about the bonds of their atoms?
