JOB APPLICATION
Welcome to the Do It Yourself guide to making a job application. Needless to explain, you must
be well aware of its purpose… pretty obvious! So… It’s got 2 components namely:
A) Covering Letter
B)) Bio Data (also referred to as Resume and Curriculum Vitae in the question)
A) Covering Letter:
It is written in the same format as any formal letter that you learnt in your earlier grades,
and so is the format of letter to an editor. The body makes all the difference. Let’s see
how.
1. Sender’s Address: This goes on the top left-hand corner of your letter. Use the name
and address given in the question, otherwise you may cook up imaginary name and
address. ‘From’ at the top is your call.
2. Date: Just below the sender’s address, write the date in full. This is when you’re
writing the letter.
3. Receiver’s Address: Below the date, write the receiver’s address. Always include the
receiver’s official title or name first (if given in the question, otherwise ‘The Hiring
Manager’ gets the job done).
4. Subject: Sum up why you’re writing the letter in one line, e.g. “Application for the post
of Translator”. Underline this for emphasis.
5. Salutation: Use either “Sir" or "Madam”. Avoid writing “Respected”.
6. Body: This is where you write the main content. For job applications, divide it into 3
paragraphs.
Paragraph 1: Mention how you found out about the job and specify the job title
you’re applying for.
- Paragraph 2: Explain why you’re the best fit for the job based on your
qualifications, achievements, and experiences. Keep it clear and to the point.
- Paragraph 3: Refer to any documents you’re enclosing (like your CV) and
politely request an interview or assert your availability for the same. End positively,
showing you’re eager to hear back.
7. Complimentary Close: Finish with a polite closing like "Yours Faithfully" or "Yours
Sincerely."
8. Signature: Sign your name (given name), and write the same in block letters under it.
Note: After signing, give a sub-heading "ENCLOSURES" and list any documents you’ve
attached, such as your passport-sized photo, Bio-data/resume, or photocopies of your
testimonials/ grade cards etc.
B) Bio Data: (Within borders on all sides and heading at the centre of the page “”BIO
DATA”.)
(i) Personal Info
➢ Full Name: As given in the question.
➢ Date of Birth: as suitable
➢ Gender:

the board/institution, year of passing and division/percentage; in descending order of with
highest qualifications at the top and class-X at the bottom. The degree has to be as per
the requirement of the post or as given in the question.
➢ Work Experience: Mention duration, name of the organization and name of the position
held; as per the requirement of the post and as given in the question.

Building Blocks: A few suggestions you may use while writing the covering letter; these are
randomly listed and suggestive only, and rather not mandatory. Thus, you may go beyond this
list, as we can sit and keep on expanding the list to not less than a dozen pages:
