Displeasure - The Rebuke 1 Pet 2:9 Chosen generation, Royal priesthood, Holy nation and Peculiar people; (Ex 19:5, 6) Rom 8:15 Abba Father; Now what a rebuke it is to call them This people. If we are referred to as that son instead of my son
How would the Lord address us today;
Displeasure - The Reason (1) Reason 1: Inconsistent with the character of God. Vs 2 Lord of hosts (14 times): Hosts (tsaw-baw): multitude Lord of Host - Zech 53 & Mal 24 times. Total in 3 post exilic books = 91/285 Organised for war - armies. Army: goes forth for war, battle, for service etc. Lord who goes forward
Reason 1: Inconsistent with the character of God David to Goliath 1Sam 17:45 Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied Lord of Host, the God of the armies of Israel.
Reason 1: Inconsistent with the character of God Hosts of the Lord - Armies of the Lord Who are these. Ex 7:4 But Pharaoh shall not hearken unto you, that I may lay my hand upon Egypt, and bring forth mine armies, and my people the children of Israel, out of the land of Egypt by great judgments. Ex 12:41 And it came to pass at the end of the four hundred and thirty years, even the selfsame day it came to pass, that all the hosts of the LORD went out from the land of Egypt.
Reason 1: Inconsistent with the character of God
Ex 12:51 And it came to pass the selfsame day, that the LORD did bring the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt by their armies Host of the Lord are His People. His people are His armies.
Reason 1: Inconsistent with the character of God Song of Deborah Jud 5:20 They fought from heaven; the stars in their courses fought against Sisera. 21 The river of Kishon swept them away, that ancient river, the river Kishon. O my soul, thou hast trodden down strength. Host of the Lord - Stars & Rivers Heaven & Earth
Reason 1: Inconsistent with the character of God 2Kg 6:15-17 And Elisha prayed, and said, LORD, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And the LORD opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha
Reason 1: Inconsistent with the character of God Joel 2:25 Lords army Vs 4 locusts; 10 earth, heavens, sun, moon & stars Gen 32:1, 2 - Gods host. Mahanaim: 2 hosts - One in front & other behind on one side & the other Ex 14:14 Lord shall fight for you Vs 19 from front went to back. Vs 20 Same cloud: light n dark
Lord of Host Hosts of God Ps 34:7 The angel of the Lord encamps round about them that fear him. Ps 24: 8, 10 Who is this King of glory? Lord strong & mighty, the Lord of Hosts; King of glory.
Captain of Host Josh 5:13-15 And he said, Nay; but as captain of the host of the LORD am I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship, and said unto him, What saith my lord unto his servant? 15 And the captain of the LORDS host said unto Joshua, Loose thy shoe from off thy foot; for the place whereon thou standest is holy. And Joshua did so. Lord of Host Lord who goes forth moves forward Our past performance or faithfulness cannot be an excuse of present neglect of the work in HOG.
Displeasure - The Reason (2) Reason 1: Inconsistent with the character of God Reason 2: Indifference of the people of God Hag 1:2 Thus sayeth the LORD of hosts, saying, This people say, The time is not come, the time that the LORDS house should be built How could they say time is not yet come? Probably they said 70 years is not completed. Captivity BC 605, 597 & 586.
Reason 2: Indifference of the people of God That they were there in the land now is proof enough that God's time had come
They did not say we will not build Of course we will built but not now.
It must have sounded very spiritual.
The Lord and Time Is the Lord particular about time? Does time matter to God? The mention of dates again and again in Haggai Gen 1 Creation count of days. 1st, 2nd . 7th day rested. Ecl. 3:11 He hath made everything beautiful in his time. The work of salvation . Gal 4:4 .When the fullness of time was come God send forth His Son .
The Lord and Time Mine hour is not yet come. Mine hour has come. Johns Gospel Joh 2:4 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come. Joh 7:30 Then they sought to take him: but no man laid hands on him, because his hour was not yet come. Joh 8:20 These words spake Jesus in the treasury, as he taught in the temple: and no man laid hands on him; for his hour was not yet come.
The Lord and Time Jn 12:23 And Jesus answered them, saying, The hour is come, that the Son of man should be glorified. Joh 13:1 Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end.
The Lord and Time
Jn 17:1 These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee: Mk 14:41 And he cometh the third time, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take your rest: it is enough, the hour is come; behold, the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners
The Lord and Time Haggai teaches God keeps count of time; days of our delay. Cyrus in the 1st year of his reign he gave the command (Ezr 1:1) Ps 90:7 Teach us to number our days
Reason 2: Indifference of the people of God What if there is no temple? Everything else is in place. Day of Atonement The only feast where the people had to afflict their souls. Zech 12:10 They will be in bitterness. To the Jews the realization of the worth of the cross is future. But to the church it the past.
Reason 2: Indifference of the people of God
For revival: Repair of our Altar. Return of our Saviour. Remember to Afflict. When we become indifferent to spiritual matters then Satan begins his work. Satan will bring in matters to distract us and rob us of the time which we need to spend in the work of the Lord.
Reason 2: Indifference of the people of God We should not allow anything however spiritual it may appear to be, to substitute the work of the House of God. Are we Indifferent to the things of God in our life? The Time is not come for return of Christ? Eph 5:16 - Redeeming the time Recover lost Time Joel 2:25 And I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten, ..... my great army .
Displeasure - The Reason (3) Reason 1: Inconsistent with the Character of God. Vs 2 Reason 2: Indifference of the People of God. Vs 2 Reason 3: Isolated the House of God Hag 1:3-4 Then came the word of the LORD by Haggai the prophet, saying, Vs4 Is it time for you, O ye, to dwell in your paneled houses, and this house lie waste? When adversity came, Jehovah ceased to fill their eye. Their eyes gradually grew dim to the things of God.
Reason 3: Isolated of the House of God What was the decree of the King? Ezr 4:21 Give ye now commandment to cause these men to cease, and that this city be not build, until another commandment shall be given from me. But what were they actually doing now. Building houses They were actually building the city. The Ruin: This house lies in waste. Where God would dwell.
Reason 3: Isolated of the House of God Was it wrong to build your own house. Was it wrong that they made ceiling over their head or paneled houses? But to neglect the House of God is what grieves the Lord Hag 1:4 Is it time for you, O ye, to dwell in your paneled houses, and this house lie waste? Waste?!!
Reason 3: Isolated of the House of God Ezr 3:7 They gave money also unto the masons, and to the carpenters; and meat, and drink, and oil, unto them of Zidon, and to them of Tyre, to bring cedar trees from Lebanon to the sea of Joppa, according to the grant that they had of Cyrus king of Persia. Hag 1:4 Is it time for you to dwell in ceiled houses? There is time for your own interest.
Reason 3: Isolated of the House of God At least when improving (paneling) their houses they should have thought of state of House of God. Hag 1:4 Is it time for you, O ye, to dwell in your paneled houses, and this house lie waste? Lord waits patiently. When The Lord brings blessing in our lives we need to remember His goodness. Do we have time?
LK 14: 17-20 And sent his servant at supper time to say to them that were bidden, Come; for all things are now ready. 18 And they all with one consent began to make excuse. The first said unto him, I have bought a piece of ground, and I must needs go and see it: I pray thee have me excused. 19 And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them: I pray thee have me excused. 20 And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.
Lk 9:59-61 59 And he said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father. 60 Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God. 61 And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house.
Reason 3: Isolated of the House of God
2Sam 7:2 That the king said unto Nathan the prophet, See now, I dwell in an house of cedar, but the ark of God dwelleth within curtains. Our business is to take care of His things; His gracious work is to care for us and supply all our needs.
The Displeasure of God It is not enough that we Begin well. Choice group of devoted people: Commendable leaders Begin in the Spirit and end in the flesh. COI left Egypt by faith and ended in the flesh in wilderness. We often begin well but along the way we fail and begin to trust in our flesh.
The Displeasure of God
2 Tim 4:7 - I have fought the good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. Rev 2:2 Church at Ephesus I know thy works, faith and labour lost the first love. Not that they did not give the Lord a place but did not give Lord the place. What place does Christ have in our life? Is he there as a guest?
