Sermon on Joel 2:25
Scripture Focus:
"I will restore to you the years that the locust has eaten, the cankerworm, and the caterpillar,
and the palmerworm, my great army which I sent among you." (Joel 2:25, KJV)
Introduction
Life sometimes brings losses—financial setbacks, broken relationships, missed opportunities,
or spiritual dryness. Joel 2:25 is a powerful promise of restoration from God, assuring us that
even the wasted years of our lives can be redeemed. Today, we’ll explore how God restores,
using examples from the Bible and daily life to encourage us to trust in His restorative power.
1. God Restores Lost Years in the Bible
a. Joseph's Journey
Joseph, sold into slavery by his brothers, spent years in Potiphar's house and prison before
becoming Pharaoh's second-in-command (Genesis 37–41). What seemed like wasted years
were actually preparation for God’s greater purpose—to save Egypt and Joseph's family from
famine.
Lesson: God can turn what looks like loss into a platform for His glory and your promotion.
b. Naomi’s Loss and Ruth’s Loyalty
Naomi lost her husband and two sons, leaving her bitter and hopeless (Ruth 1). Yet through
Ruth, her daughter-in-law, God restored her joy and gave her a grandson, Obed, who became
part of the lineage of Jesus.
Lesson: God can bring restoration through unexpected people and circumstances.
c. Job's Restoration
Job lost his wealth, health, and family in a series of devastating events. Yet, because of his
faith, God restored Job’s fortunes, giving him double what he had before (Job 42:10).
Lesson: When we remain faithful, God’s restoration surpasses what we can imagine.
2. God Restores in Day-to-Day Life
a. Financial Restoration
Imagine a business owner who loses everything due to a recession. Through hard work,
perseverance, and prayer, they rebuild their business better than before. This mirrors God’s
ability to restore what feels lost.
b. Restored Relationships
A family torn apart by misunderstanding or divorce may, through God’s intervention, find healing
and unity. Forgiveness and love are tools God uses to restore families.
c. Health Restoration
Someone battling chronic illness may experience recovery through medical treatment and
prayer. Even if full healing doesn’t come, God can restore peace and purpose in their heart.
d. Emotional Restoration
Grief or depression might feel like wasted years, but God uses counseling, community, and His
Spirit to bring joy and hope again.
3. Keys to Experiencing God's Restoration
a. Repentance and Turning Back to God
Joel 2:12-13 reminds us to return to God with all our hearts. Repentance opens the door for His
restoration.
b. Faith in God’s Promises
Hold on to the truth that God’s promises are true. Like Abraham, who believed despite his old
age, trust that God can fulfill His word.
c. Gratitude and Patience
Be thankful for what God has already done and wait on Him. Restoration often comes in His
perfect timing, not ours.
d. Seek God’s Guidance
Pray for wisdom on how to rebuild and move forward. God often restores through our actions
and obedience.
Conclusion
Joel 2:25 reminds us that no matter what we’ve lost—time, opportunities, relationships, or
resources—God is able and willing to restore. Like Joseph, Naomi, and Job, we can experience
God’s faithfulness in restoring not just what we had but giving us even more than we could ask
or think.
