/instances of
the new lessons What is critique? to give an opinion or judgment
about a piece or work, book, film,
etc.
What are the parts of a critique
paper? We have the introduction, thesis
statement, body and conclusion.

You must also have your claim but

it must have reasons and
evidences.

Today you are going to use the

Formalist as the approach of
critiquing a literary piece.
Formalist approach focuses on the
structure of the literary piece and
does not care to the outside context
such as the background of the
author and the historical
background.
There are three main things that
you must not forget in critiquing a
literary piece.

The first is the literary elements,

imagery and the figures of speech
used in the piece.

It’s your time to construct your own

critique paper. Last time I asked
you to read the short story “The
Gift of Magi”. That will be the
literary piece that you are going to
critique using formalist approach.

This is the rubric for you to be

guided in making your critique
paper.
