CHAPTER ONE
1.0 BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Auto workshop multi-purpose stand will be used in industries in the field of spray painting. The
project also can be used in auto spare parts shops, car wash and in the hardware warehouse.
The project conducted in Subaru Kenya was to determine the best system in spray painting
which would be easy in the workshops.
1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROJECT
The main aim for this project is to solve the problems in the automotive field. The project base
more on the spray painting sector. The problems experienced in this sector, this project will solve
them by a certain range which will be convenient. Once the system is implemented, it will make
working easier for the specified field it belongs.
1.3 OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT
The objectives are:
i. Solve the problem of spray painting on heavy commercial vehicles
ii. Create employment
iii. Help in washing vehicles with higher heights, e.g. lorries
iv. Help in renovation in the auto workshop when painting the building.
v. Help in collecting of automobile spare parts in the auto workshops.
1.4 HYPOTHSIS (RESEARCH QUESTION)
The type of research used in this project is observation. It demands core priorities, generates
operational definitions and provide a better research. Spray painting done by workers is tiresome
been done without a stand, hence this project will help in making this work easy.
The researcher starts with a general idea and comes up with a project to implement the stand.
1.5 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
The study findings will further review how the stand work and how its strengthened while being
used.
The stand will help in spray paintings, car wash and auto spares parts in solving the problem.
The stand will improve their productivity and lead to higher performance in these sectors.
1.6 CONCEPTUAL/THEORETICAL
The auto workshop multi-purpose stand is a mechanical stand that will make the work to be done
in an easier way in the field of automotive engineering.
CHAPTER TWO
2.0 LITERATURE REVIEW
This chapter is about a survey of scholarly. Auto workshop multi-purpose stand is a simple
fabricated item which will be used to solve the challenges encountered in the field of automotive
in spray painting and other areas in this filed.
2.1 DISCUSSION OF EXISTING DESIGN
The type of research used is observatory research. Its conducted for a problem solving in the
automotive field. It explains the aspects of the study and in detailed manner. The research starts
with a general idea and come up with an idea to fabricate the actual stand using the necessary
materials for the construction.
2.2 THE NEW DESIGN
The design we implement will serve many purposes in the industry of automotive. The stand has
four legs, strong enough to withstand any bodies weight. It is easy to use and will have a tool box
that will be used to keep the stand tools.
2.3 EVALUATION OF PROPOSED DESIGN
The evaluation design will detail the planning of the evaluation of the design to be fabricated. It
will build on the context of completing the design. The information at this stage can be compiled
into an evaluation design.
2.3 MATERAILS SELECTION
The material used was iron metal due to:
✓ The material can easily be cut into pieces
✓ The iron metal is cheaper
✓ Material is easily accessible
✓ Its durable
The metal sheet used will have a rough surface to provide friction when being used. It will be
painted for better appearance and corrosion and rust.
2.4 MAIN PARTS OF THE STAND
BODY: CONSITS of chassis and metal sheet which is rough or reduce accidents and injuries
that may occur during work time.
LEGS: THEY are four to provide stability
LADDER: its removable and consists of rough metal sheet for easy ascending and descending.
TOOL BOX: it is used for holding tools that are being used when carrying out the other duties.
2.5 PARTS JOINING METHOD
The fabrication of the actual structure is dealing with iron metal materials. It will use arc welding
for joining the parts ti=together. The method is cheaper compared to other methods, like gas
welding method which is expensive.
CHAPTER THREE
3.0 METHODOLOGY
3.1 NATURE OF ACTIVITY FOR PRODUCTION
During my attachment period, the garages I visited had no stands to be used while spraying the
body shape section. Lack of tye stands gave the workers a hard time, since they used ladders
which are risky to the fact that they might fall anytime. This why we implemented the stand to
solve the problem.
The material used are safe, though light in weight for portability.
3.2 PRODUCTION OF COMPONENTS OF MULTI PURPOSE STAND
To develop the multi-purpose stand, there were some technical procedure followed.
They included:
i. Measuring – measurements were required to avoid wastage of materials.
ii. Marking – marking was done using a mark pen for the measurements required.
iii. Cutting – cutting of materials was done using a cutting g machine to save time.
iv. Drilling – drilled the two pieces for connection of the stand ladder which is removable.
v. Grinding – was done to ensure no sharp edges were left behind using a grinder machine.
vi. Joining – use d a welding machine to join up the pieces that were cut to accomplish the
stand.
vii. Finishing – the fabricated stand is completed and polished ready for the work.
3.3 FABRICATION PROCESS
The process will involve cutting arc welding, painting and joining. The material includes:
• Square hollow tube
• Rough iron sheet
• Paint
• Brush
• Thinner
The tools to be used to carry out this operation are:
✓ Arc welding machine
✓ Hark saw
✓ Measuring tape
✓ Hand grinder
✓ Set square
3.4 MEASURING AND CUTTING OF MATERIAL
This stage has a sketch of the multipurpose stand that shows the accurate measurement, it avoid
wastage of material hence saving capital. After measuring and marking all the materials were cut
accurately and accordingly to the desired size and shape.
3.5 TESTING OF MULTI PURPOSE STAND
After the completion of the stand, it was tested to analyze its effectiveness.
For better test, we had two people stand on the stand to see if they outweigh the stand but they
did not.
3.6 COSTING OF MULTI PURPOSE STAND
In this section the materials to be used are classified according to their cost and availability.
There was recording of data for reference and appropriate allocation of expenditure.
Reasons for costing multipurpose stand
i. To determine the cost of the stand according to the target market.
ii. Helps to change the design when cost is high.
iii. Determine the exact cost of articles
iv. Reduce the total cost of manufacturer by ignoring some unnecessary material.
v. Identify the cost of material and lobour needed
The following are some method used to determine the costing
i. Labour cost
ii. Material cost
Labour cost
It includes machinery process like welding and manufacturing of multi-purpose stand. It depends
on the wage rate and time of the work done.
The estimation cost of the project was 7,500 Kshs.
Material cost
It’s the identification cost of the material which are used for the project. On determining the cost
following factors where considered:
a) Availability of the material
b) Costing of the material
c) Quality and quantity of the material to be used.
MATERIAL USED COST(KSHS)
Square hollow tube(2 inches thickness 16 4620
gauge ) 40 feet
16 gauge plane iron sheet 5910
½ packet of steel arc welding rod 575
Square hollow tube for ladder 20 feet 2310
1 litter of paint (black) 1060

CHAPTER FOUR
4.0 FINDINGS, DATA ANALYSIS, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
4.1 DISCUSSION OF FINDINGS
SAFETY
Safety measures should be the first priority when handling shop stand. This will help to reduce
the accidents in the workshops, and for this to be achieved the technician should return the stand
to the right place after its work is done.
4.2 FINDINGS
After completing the project of fabricating the stand the practical experiment was executed. The
results were very excellent but there were some drawbacks, by the stand sinking on the floor
which was not cemented. This caused the stand to lack stability on the ground which may cause
accidents.
We also found out the stand caused the damage on the floor since it lacked the rubber stands
which prevents cracks on a cemented floor.
4.3 CONCLUSIONS BASEED ON RESEARCH FINDINGS
The implementation of the design was carried out on the entire stands. The tool box was in place
to help in maintaining the stand. The stand was designed that it would handle weight of several
individuals.
The conclusion was that, for the stand to work effectively, it needs the rubber stands, and to be
used in a floor that is not cemented, it requires one to lay down a metal sheet for stability.
4.4 RECOMMENDATION
After fabrication of the project, we recommended that for effective operation and durability of
the stand it should be maintained regularly. To prevent rust and corrosion the stand should be
painted often.
Once the workers are done, the stand will be returned to its rightful place to avoid accidents, in
the workshop.
