Education - is the social institution responsible for the systematic transmission of knowledge, skills, and cultural values
within a formally organized structure.
Informal education - Learning that occurs in a spontaneous and unplanned way. It takes started at home. Parents or
guardians are the teachers here.
Formal Education - Learning that takes place within an academic setting such as a school, which has a planned
instructional process and teachers who convey specific knowledge, skills and thinking process to students.
School- Is a social institution that is established organization and set of functions meant to preserve and extend social
order. Its image is concerned with preserving our heritage and adapt to social change and make change happen where it is
needed
Function of School
Intellectual – its purpose is to include following: to tach basic cognitive skills, to transmit specific knowledge, and to help
students to acquire HOTS.
Political – its purpose is to inculcate allegiance to the existing political order.
Social - its purpose is to socialize children into the various roles, behaviors, and values of the society.
Economic - its purpose is to prepare students for their later occupational roles and to select, train and allocate individuals
into the division of labor.
Other important functions of education - i. Productive citizenry, ii. Self-actualization, iii. Primary education as a human right
Educational Functions - This refers to the contribution of the school to the development and maintenance of education of
different levels of society. Traditionally education is often perceived as only a means for achieving the economic, social,
political and cultural values and goals.
There are four major Education Functions that contributes to every individual who undergone education.
A. Technical/ Economic Function - This refers to the contribution of the school to the technical/ economic development
and needs of the individual, the institution, the local community, the society and the international community.
B. Human/ Social Function - This refers to the contribution of schools to human development and social relationships at
different levels of the society
C. Political Functions - This refers to the contribution of schools to the political development at different levels of
society. At the individual levels schools help students to develop positive civic attitudes and skills to exercise the rights
and responsibilities of citizenship.
D. Cultural Functions - This refers to the contribution of schools to the cultural transmissions and development at
different levels of society. School helps students to develop their creativity and aesthetic awareness to be socialized with
the successful norms, values and belief of society.
SIX SUB-MAJOR MANIFEST FUNCTIONS OF EDUCATION IN SOCIETY
1. Socialization – teach students roles, specific subject and political socialization.
2. Social Control – school are responsible for teaching values.
3. Social Placement – schools are responsible for identifying the most qualified people to fill available positions in society.
4. transmitting Culture – as a social institution education performs a conservable function-transmitting the dominant culture.
5. Promoting Social and political Integration
6. Agent of change – education can bring about desired social change
Summary of key points
Learning is when people seek knowledge.
Education is when knowledge is provided for people.
Schools exist to Protect children from exploitation
Teach children cultural values
Train children for the work they will do in adult life
Socialize children to become acceptable adults. Control children
Depending on your perspective, some of these characteristics of the education system can be seen as positive, and others
as negative.
Hidden Curriculum - is the transmission of cultural values and attitudes, such as conformity and obedience to authority,
through implied demands found in rules, routines and regulations in schools.
