Timothy 2
Chapter 1
1. Paul, an apostle (messenger or representative) of Jesus Christ by God's will, according to the promise
of life in Christ Jesus,
2. To Timothy, my beloved son: Grace (unearned favor), mercy (compassion), and peace (inner calm)
from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
3. I thank God, whom I serve with a clear conscience (a state of moral honesty), as my ancestors did,
remembering you in my prayers constantly,
4. longing to see you, remembering your tears, so that I may be filled with joy,
5. when I recall the genuine faith (sincere trust in God) in you, which first lived in your grandmother Lois
and your mother Eunice, and I am sure it lives in you too.
6. Therefore, I remind you to rekindle (stir up or revive) the gift of God that is in you through the laying
on of my hands.
7. For God did not give us a spirit of fear, but of power (strength), love, and a sound mind (self-control
and clear thinking).
8. So do not be ashamed of the testimony (witness) about our Lord, nor of me, His prisoner, but join
with me in suffering (enduring hardship) for the gospel, relying on God’s power,
9. who saved us and called us to a holy calling (a special purpose), not because of anything we have
done, but because of His own purpose and grace, which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time
began,
10. but has now been revealed (made known) through the appearing (arrival) of our Savior Jesus Christ,
who has destroyed death and brought life and immortality (eternal life) to light through the gospel.
11. I was appointed (chosen) as a preacher (one who proclaims), apostle (messenger), and teacher of
the Gentiles (non-Jews) for this gospel.
12. For this reason, I suffer these things; yet I am not ashamed, because I know whom I have believed,
and I am convinced (certain) that He is able to guard (protect) what I have entrusted (given) to Him until
that Day.
13. Hold on to the pattern (model or example) of sound teaching (true doctrine) you have heard from
me, with faith and love in Christ Jesus.
14. Guard (keep safe) the good deposit (trustworthy message) entrusted to you, with the help of the
Holy Spirit who dwells (lives) in us.
15. You know that everyone in Asia has turned away from me, including Phygellus and Hermogenes.
16. May the Lord show mercy (kindness) to the household of Onesiphorus, because he often refreshed
(encouraged) me and was not ashamed of my chains (imprisonment).
17. When he came to Rome, he eagerly searched (sought diligently) for me and found me.
18. May the Lord grant him mercy on that Day (the day of judgment), and you know very well how he
helped me in Ephesus (a city in Asia Minor).

Chapter 2
1. So, my child, be strong in the grace (the unearned favor and help of God) that is found in Christ Jesus.
2. And what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, pass on to reliable
(trustworthy, dependable) people who will also be able to teach others. 3. Endure (to suffer through or
bear with patience) hardship like a good soldier of Jesus Christ. 4. A soldier does not get distracted by
civilian affairs, because his focus is on pleasing the one who enlisted (called or recruited to serve) him. 5.
Similarly, an athlete is not crowned (awarded a prize or honor) unless they compete according to the
rules. 6. The hardworking (diligent) farmer should be the first to enjoy the crops. 7. Think about what I’m
saying, and may the Lord give you understanding (the ability to comprehend or grasp the meaning) in all
things. 8. Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, the offspring (descendant or child) of David, as
proclaimed in my gospel, 9. For which I suffer even to the point of being chained (tied or bound, often to
imprison or restrict) like a criminal. But the word of God cannot be chained. 10. So, I endure everything
for the sake of the elect (those chosen by God for salvation), so that they too may receive salvation in
Christ Jesus with eternal glory. 11. This is a trustworthy (reliable, dependable) saying: If we died with
Him, we will also live with Him. 12. If we endure, we will also reign (to rule or govern) with Him. If we
deny Him, He will deny us. 13. If we are faithless (lacking faith or loyalty), He remains faithful, for He
cannot deny Himself. 14. Remind them of these things and charge them before God not to quarrel
(argue or disagree) over words, which is useless and leads to the ruin of those who listen. 15. Do your
best to present yourself to God as one approved (accepted or recognized as good), a worker who does
not need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth. 16. Avoid godless chatter (trivial or
meaningless talk), because it will only lead to more ungodliness, 17. and their message will spread like
cancer. Hymenaeus and Philetus are among those who have strayed (deviated or wandered away from
the right path) from the truth, 18. saying that the resurrection (the rising of the dead to life again) has
already taken place, and they are destroying the faith of some. 19. Nevertheless, God’s firm foundation
(the underlying basis or support of something) stands, with this seal: "The Lord knows those who are
His," and "Let everyone who names the name of the Lord turn away from wickedness." 20. In a large
house, there are not only vessels (containers or tools) of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay, some
for honorable use and some for dishonorable. 21. If anyone cleanses (purifies or makes clean)
themselves from these, they will be a vessel for honorable use, sanctified (made holy or set apart for a
special purpose) and useful to the Master, prepared for every good work. 22. Flee (run away or escape
from) from youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call
on the Lord from a pure heart. 23. Avoid foolish and ignorant disputes (arguments or disagreements),
knowing that they only lead to quarrels. 24. And the servant (a person who serves, often referring to a
follower of God or Christ) of the Lord must not quarrel, but must be kind to everyone, able to teach, and
patient, 25. Correcting opponents with gentleness. Perhaps God will grant them repentance (the act of
feeling regret or remorse and turning away from sin), leading them to a knowledge of the truth, 26. And
they may come to their senses and escape the trap (a snare or trick used to capture or deceive) of the
devil, who has taken them captive to do his will.

Chapter 3
1. But know this: in the last days, perilous (dangerous) times will come. 2. Men will be lovers of
themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,
3. unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, 4. traitors,
headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5. having a form of godliness but
denying its power. From such people turn away! 6. They creep into households, making captives of
gullible (easily deceived) women, laden with sins, led away by lusts, 7. always learning but never able to
come to the knowledge of the truth. 8. As Jannes and Jambres resisted Moses, so do these resist the
truth: men of corrupt (dishonest) minds, disapproved concerning the faith, 9. but they will progress no
further, for their folly will be evident to all, as theirs was. 10. You have followed my doctrine, manner of
life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, love, perseverance, 11. persecutions, and afflictions, which happened
to me at Antioch, Iconium, and Lystra—what persecutions I endured. The Lord delivered me from them
all. 12. All who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution. 13. But evil men and impostors
(fraudulent people) will grow worse, deceiving and being deceived. 14. You must continue in what you
have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them, 15. and that from
childhood, you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through
faith in Christ Jesus. 16. All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for doctrine, reproof, correction,
and instruction in righteousness, 17. that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for
every good work.

Chapter 4
1. I charge you before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead when He
appears and establishes His kingdom. 2. Preach the Word! Be ready at all times. Correct, rebuke, and
encourage with patience and sound teaching. 3. A time is coming when people won’t endure sound
doctrine (true teaching) and will seek teachers who say what they want to hear. 4. They will turn from
the truth and follow myths (false stories). 5. You, however, be alert in everything, endure suffering, do
the work of an evangelist (one who spreads the gospel), and fulfill your ministry. 6. I am being poured
out as a drink offering (sacrificial offering), and my departure is near. 7. I have fought the good fight,
finished the race, and kept the faith. 8. Now a crown of righteousness awaits me, which the Lord, the
righteous Judge, will give on that Day to me and all who long for His appearing. 9. Be diligent to come to
me quickly; 10. Demas has abandoned me, loving the world, and gone to Thessalonica; Crescens to
Galatia, and Titus to Dalmatia. 11. Only Luke is with me. Bring Mark, for he is useful to me in ministry.
12. I have sent Tychicus to Ephesus. 13. When you come, bring the cloak I left with Carpus at Troas, and
the books, especially the parchments (scrolls). 14. Alexander the coppersmith (metalworker) harmed me
greatly. May the Lord repay him. 15. Be careful of him; he opposed our message strongly. 16. At my first
defense (hearing), no one stood with me. May it not be charged against them. 17. But the Lord stood
with me and gave me strength, so the gospel might be proclaimed fully, and I was delivered from the
lion’s mouth. 18. The Lord will deliver me from every evil attack and bring me safely to His heavenly
kingdom. To Him be glory forever. 19. Greet Prisca and Aquila, and the household of Onesiphorus. 20.
Erastus stayed in Corinth, but Trophimus I left sick in Miletus (a city in Asia Minor). 21. Try to come
before winter. Eubulus, Pudens, Linus, Claudia, and all the brothers greet you. 22. May the Lord Jesus
Christ be with your spirit. Grace be with you. Amen.
