Is it important to conserve our
architectural heritage?
By: Janvi Bhardwaj
rchitectural Heritage refers to the buildings or
A ruins that were constructed in past and whose
value is been increased in terms of historical,
technical, emotional or cultural. Heritage buildings
basically represent the past history and culture of a
nation.
It tells us a lot about our past:
• What type of people lived?
• How construction was done?
• What type of technology they used?
• What they used for constructing these grand superstructures?
Why is it important to conserve it?
Back in 1982, a survey was taken of sixth and 12th-graders in a Midwest school district to
determine how the students felt about social studies. The results: The kids were “largely
indifferent” or revealed “negative attitudes” toward social studies. If you listen to students and
teachers, not much has changed since: A lot of kids in K-12 schools find history class boring.
Conservation of heritage buildings is very important because it provides a sense of identity
and continuity in a fast changing world for
future generations.
World Heritage Day is internationally
celebrated on 18th April.
Heritage in India
The world recognizes India as a place
resplendent with a heritage dating back
to 9,500 years ago. The architectural
significance of these heritage buildings
reflects the advanced understanding of
design and engineering prowess during
their respective eras.
First steps in heritage
conservation
Some of the immediate safety measures
which can be easily installed and
integrated include CCTV, smoke
detectors, fire alarm systems accompanied by gas/water sprinklers, firewalls and water curtains.
Safety drills among different rescue departments working in tandem should be a quarterly affair
to curb on-site panic. Heritage buildings undergoing restoration work should cordon off the weak
sections, making them inaccessible to the general public. A question then arises - Why can India
not lead the world in technological endeavors which can transform the architectural conservation
and restoration techniques for heritage buildings and monuments the world over?
Applying technology in heritage conservation
Contemporary technology segments such as artificial intelligence, machine learning and the
Internet of Things (IOT) would not only expedite the problem solving for the concerns at hand
but also support the building management systems (BMS). This combination could be
revolutionary in regulating issues of security and vandalism.
World Heritage in Danger
The List of World Heritage in Danger is designed by UNESCO to inform the international
community of conditions which threaten the very characteristics for which a property was
inscribed on the World Heritage List, and to encourage corrective action.
