Great Britain.
London
The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is situated on the British Isles.
London is the capital of the United Kingdom. It is its political and business centre. It
appeared at the place where the Roman invaders decided to build a bridge over the
Thames. London consists of four parts: the City, Westminster area (or Westminster), the
West End and the East End.
The heart of London is the City. Many people work in the City but very few live there. There
are a lot of banks and other offices there. You can visit some interesting places in or near it.
One of them is the Tower of London. The Tower of London used to be a fortress, a palace, a
prison and the King’s Zoo. You can see a lot of interesting things in the rooms of the White
Tower. Its square walls are white and very tall. William the Conqueror built it in the 11th
century. There are always black ravens in the Tower of London. People keep them in the
Tower of London and look after them. One of the greatest English churches, St Paul’s
Cathedral, is not far from the Tower of London. The famous English architect Sir Christopher
Wren built it in the 17th century after the Great Fire. It is a beautiful building with many
columns and towers. In one of its towers there is one of the largest bells in the world.
Westminster is known to be the administrative centre of London. The Houses of Parliament,
the seat of the British Government, are located there. The Towers of the Houses of
Parliament stand high above the city. On the highest tower there is the largest clock in the
country, Big Ben which strikes every quarter of an hour. The official London residence of the
King is Buckingham Palace. The daily ceremony of the Changing of the Guard takes place in
its courtyard.
As well as being perfect for relaxing, London's parks have plenty of things to do and
activities to enjoy: sports events; open-air theater; live music concerts and adventure
playground for children. St James’s Park, Green Park, Hyde Park, and Kensington Gardens
are a perfect place to relax.
To the west of Westminster is the West End, the richest part of London. It is full of luxurious
hotels, cinemas and concert-halls. Some people say it is the most beautiful place in London.
In the middle of the square one can see a tall column. Four bronze lions look at the square
from the monument. There are two beautiful fountains in the square. They are in front of
the National Gallery which is one of the richest picture galleries in the world. One of
London’s main attractions is its fantastic selection of museums and galleries: The British
Museum, the Natural History Museum, and the Science Museum welcome visitors every
day. The British Museum is the biggest museum in London and it is famous for its library —
one of the richest ones in the world
To the east of Westminster there is the East End, an industrial district of the capital. Most of
the plants and factories are situated there.
In conclusion I should say if you are lucky enough to find yourself in London someday, you
will have a lot to stay and enjoy there.
