Dachshund bookmark/applique

pattern

Dachshund bookmark or applique

This pattern was originally made for a bookmark, but it can also make a cute applique
just by having a shorter body. You can use any hook and yarn for this pattern, however,
I recommend cotton yarn if you’re making a bookmark. I used cotton fingering weight
yarn and a 3mm hook.

The bookmark is worked from the back to the front. The stitches used are:

• Chain (ch)
• Single crochet (sc)
• Slip stitch (sl st)
• Increase (inc) – work two sc in the same stitch
• Decrease (dec) – work two sc together

Note: US terms are used.

Pattern

Hind legs:

• Ch 6, sc in 2nd ch from hook, 4 sc, ch 4, turn

• Sc in 2nd chain from hook, 7 sc, ch and turn
• 8 sc, ch and turn
• 2 sc in 1st st, sl st in next 2 st, 5 sc, ch and turn

Main body

• [5 sc, ch and turn] for as many rows as you’d like until you reach the desired
length, ending on a wrong side row where the arrow is pointing (i.e. on the
dog’s back, not the belly side)

If you’re making a bookmark, the body should be slightly longer than a book so that
the front and hind legs protrude when the book is closed. If you’re making an applique,
feel free to make your pup as long as you would like.

Front legs and chest:

• 4 sc, inc in last st (on the belly side), ch and turn

• 2 sc in 1st st, 5 sc, ch and turn
• 7 sc, ch 4, turn
• Sc in 2nd chain from hook, 9 sc, ch and turn
• 10 sc, ch and turn
• 2 sc in 1st st, sl st in next 2 st, 7 sc, ch and turn
• 6 sc, tie off.

Head:

*Use different coloured yarn for this row if you’d like your doggie to have a collar.

• *Attach yarn on the dog’s back at the 5th row from last (see arrow)
• *5 sc, ch and turn
• 5 sc, ch and turn
• 5 sc, ch 4, turn
• Sc in 2nd ch from hook, 7 sc, ch and turn
• 8 sc, ch and turn
• 2 sc in 1st st, 7 sc, ch and turn
• 4 sc, dec, tie off

Ear:

• Row 1: Ch 4, sc in 2nd ch from hook, 2 sc

• Rows 2-4: 3 sc, ch and turn
• Sc 3 together
• Sc around the whole ear, tie off

Finishing:

• Sc around the entire outline of the dog

• When you reach the corner where the tail goes, sc in the corner, ch 10, sl st in
2nd ch from hook, 8 sl st, sc in same corner st and continue around (see white
arrow)
• 2 sc go in each corner stitch (see blue arrows)
• You may need to skip some stitches in order to keep the main body straight. I
used [2 sc, skip 1] at the belly and back
• Attach the ear to the top of the head while doing the sc around. I attached it
over 3 stitches at the very top of the head (rectangle)

Weave in your ends and you’re done!

If your bookmark is twisting slightly or not laying quite flat, a gentle ironing or blocking
will help. I ironed mine dry on the ‘cotton’ setting, being careful not to leave the iron
on for more than a few seconds at a time, but feel free to use whatever blocking
method you prefer.
