LESSON 4: GLOBALIZATION AND COMMUNICATION

Description of the Lesson:

In this lesson, you will learn that our world is becoming both bigger and smaller as
technology progresses. At the touch of a button, we can now connect with people all over
the world. While globalization, or communication between countries and outside their
boundaries is now possible to communicate easily with the advent of new technology. It
has a fascinating effect on how we communicate and learn in the present time. It broadens
our understanding of fellowship and deepening our educational experiences as we become
more connected. The increased use of the internet, in particular, has played a significant
role in increasing our ability to communicate with one another. I know that you are excited
to know more about our topic! Come on! Let us start!

Objectives
At the end of the lesson, you are expected to:
a. understand the importance and benefits of communication in globalization;
b. exhibit appreciation about the impact of globalization to communication through an
illustration; and
c. explain the relationship of globalization to communication.

Day 1: Pre-assessment (What I know)

It is a brand-new day to be more motivated to reach our goal for this week!
Before we proceed to our main lesson, let us first try this activity.

Lesson Content (What’s New)
In this lesson, we are going to discuss how globalization and
communication are interrelated with each other. Kindly comprehend and
analyze the lesson carefully. Be mindful that you should take down the
essential terms and concepts that you will encounter in this module in
your notebook. You can also highlight the vital information that you think
may help you in understanding our lesson better. At the end of this topic,
you will be required to apply your learnings in a post-assessment activity.
Let us go!
Lesson Proper
Globalization refers to the acceleration of
global movements and exchanges (of people,
goods, services, capital, technologies, and
cultural practices). Globalization has the effect of
promoting and increasing interactions between
different regions and populations around the
world.
GLOBALIZATION

According to the World Health

Organization, globalization is characterized
as "an increase in the interconnectedness
and interdependence of people and
nations." It is commonly understood to
include two interconnected elements: the
opening of international borders to
increasingly rapid flows of goods, services,
finance, people, and ideas, as well as
changes in national and international
institutions and policies that facilitate or GLOBALIZATION BY THE WHO
encourage such flows."

GLOBALIZATION IN THE ECONOMY

Globalization can be characterized as "the increasing interdependence of world

economies as a result of the rising scale of cross-border trade of goods and services, the
flow of foreign capital, and the broad and rapid spread of technologies," according to the
Committee for Development Policy (a UN subsidiary body). It represents the ongoing
expansion and mutual integration of market frontiers, as well as the rapidly increasing
importance of information in all kinds of productive activities and marketization, which are
the two main driving forces for economic globalization."

Week 4 – Lesson 4 2|Page
GLOBALIZATION IN COMMUNICATION

Businesses must communicate

efficiently to effectively explain how their
goods and services differ from those of their
rivals. Companies that are successful in cross-
cultural communication have a competitive
advantage because they can devote more time
and resources to conducting business and less
time and resources to internal and external
communication problems.

Individuals need communication to express themselves and meet basic needs.

Businesses, nations, and countries are all in the same boat. There would be anarchy if
people couldn't connect and understand each other. Personal biases and prejudices are more
likely to cause misunderstandings when communication is based on cultural context.

INCREASED BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES

In today's world, many businesses recruit workers from

other countries. Using communication tools like video calling,
it's easy to communicate with colleagues worldwide, almost as
if they're in the same room. Technology also makes it easier to
communicate with suppliers and customers all over the world,
as well as to streamline those relationships by improving
ordering, shipment tracking, and other functions. Many
companies can take advantage of opportunities in different
countries or cities with this type of communication by the use
of technology which improves the global economic outlook.

Information can be transferred as a precious business asset from one country to other
by global communications. This has the effect of making everyone's operations, regardless of
location, more modern and practical.

FEWER CULTURAL BARRIERS

Many people believe that society is to blame for communication problems. When
people from two different cultures attempt to communicate, the way they speak, their body
language, and their mannerisms can all be misinterpreted by the other. Culture has an impact
on how people approach issues and how they engage in communities.

Purposive Communication
Week 4 – Lesson 4 3|Page
For example, globalization has allowed someone in
Japan to learn how someone in the United States goes about
their day. Cultural barriers are dissipating by the utilization of
television and film. Being able to communicate effectively and
regularly with colleagues or friends all over the world allows
people to gain a better understanding of each other's cultures.

CREATION OF GLOBAL VILLAGE

The term "global village," coined by theorist

Marshall McLuhan, is probably familiar to you. The
global village is built when distance and isolation no
longer matter because people are linked by technology.
It is influenced by both globalization and global
communication. For many people around the world,
particularly those in developing countries, widespread
telephone and internet access has changed their lives.
Many people are now able to enroll in universities all
over the world without ever leaving their desk chair.
Employees from developing countries are increasingly
working as virtual assistants for businesses in North
America and Europe, providing administrative support
and other business services that can be easily done over
the phone or over the internet.

Globalization and communication have made it easier to see people on the other side
of the globe as neighbors rather than strangers from another country. It's no longer a
complete mystery because there is so much information about other countries and cultures
available online.

INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION: COMMUNICATION ACROSS CULTURE IN

GLOBALIZATION

It's challenging to communicate across cultures. Each culture has its own set of rules that
its members follow without question. Because cultural imprinting begins at a young age, few are
aware of our own cultural biases. While some of a culture's understanding, laws, beliefs, values,
phobias, and anxieties are specifically taught, the vast majority of information is absorbed
subconsciously.

The task of global communication has never been more challenging. Intercultural
communication has become increasingly crucial to global business organizations due to
increased globalization and as their domestic workforce becomes more ethnically and culturally
diverse.
We are all unique individuals, and no two people from the same culture will react in the same
way. In general, on the other hand, they are helpful in terms of predicting what you'll find when
dealing with people from a particular culture.

Purposive Communication
Week 4 – Lesson 4 4|Page
HIGH-CONTEXT VS. LOW-CONTEXT

Cultural differences have an impact on all international communication. Even the

method of communication used has cultural implications. The degree of industrialization
may not be the deciding factor, but rather whether it belongs to a high-context or low-
context society.
High-context cultures (Mediterranean, Slav, Central European, Latin American,
African, Arab, Asian, American-Indian) leave much of the message unspoken, deciphered
through context, nonverbal cues, and reading between the lines. Low-context cultures, on
the other hand (most Germanic and English-speaking countries), expect explicit and unique
messages.

SEQUENTIAL VS. SYNCHRONIC

Some cultures regard time as a linear commodity that can be "spent," "saved," or
"wasted." Other cultures regard time as a synchronized flow that must be experienced at
the moment and a force that cannot be contained or regulated. Businesspeople in sequential
cultures (such as North America, England, Germany, Sweden, and the Netherlands) devote
their full attention to one agenda item after another.
The flow of time is considered a circle in synchronic societies (which include South
America, southern Europe, and Asia), with the past, present, and future interconnected.
This perspective shapes how companies in those societies approach deadlines, strategic
thinking, investments, internal talent development, and "long-term" planning.
Another aspect of time in which cultures vary is an orientation to the past, present,
and future. Americans believe that personal effort will impact the future, but we prefer a
short-term perspective because there are so many variables in the distant future.
Synchronistic cultures aim to comprehend the present and plan for the future. Any
significant relationship is a long-lasting bond that spans generations, and it is frequently
regarded as grossly disloyal not to favor friends and family in business dealings.

AFFECTIVE VS. NEUTRAL

Reason and feeling also play a role in international business practices. These take
precedence depending on whether we take an affective (emotionally expressive) or
emotionally neutral approach. Members of neutral societies do not express their emotions
openly but rather keep them under tight control and subdued. People in high-affect
cultures express themselves openly by laughing, smiling, grimacing, scowling, and
sometimes crying, yelling, or walking out of the room.
This isn't to say that people in neutral cultures are cold or unfeeling; instead, in
everyday business, neutral cultures are more conscious of the amount of emotion they
show. Japan, Indonesia, the United Kingdom, Norway, and the Netherlands were the least
accepting of emotional responses. In contrast, Italy, France, the United States, and
Singapore were the most accepting.

Purposive Communication
Week 4 – Lesson 4 5|Page
All human communication includes both reason and emotion. We seek confirmation
of our thoughts and emotions from others when we express ourselves. We're looking for a
direct emotional reaction if our approach is heavily emotional: "I feel the same way." We
want an indirect answer if our strategy is extremely neutral: "I agree with your thoughts on
this."
What is proper and accurate in one culture may be ineffective or even offensive in another
when it comes to communication. No culture is better or worse than another; they are simply
different. There is no single best way to communicate with one another in today's global
business community. The key to cross-cultural achievement is to achieve a deep
understanding of the differences and deep respect for them.
Great! Now, we have just finished the discussion in this week’s lesson. I hope that
you have your notes which may help and guide you in answering various activities ahead of
this module.
