Peregrine Falcon

Introduction

The Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrinus) is known for being the fastest bird, reaching speeds of over

240 mph during its hunting dives.

Physical Characteristics

It has a sleek body, pointed wings, and a black 'helmet' marking. Adult falcons have bluish-gray

feathers with a white underbelly.

Habitat and Distribution

Found on every continent except Antarctica, they thrive in a variety of environments including cliffs,

urban buildings, and coastlines.

Diet and Hunting Behavior

Peregrine Falcons primarily hunt birds, using their incredible speed and sharp talons to capture prey

mid-air.

Reproduction and Lifecycle

They lay 3-4 eggs in simple scrapes on cliffs or buildings. Both parents share incubation and feeding

duties.

Conservation Status

Once endangered due to DDT pesticide use, they have made a strong recovery thanks to

conservation programs.

Peregrine Falcons have been used in falconry for thousands of years and can spot prey from over a

mile away.
