The ThinkPad Drive Erase Utility resets the Cryptographic Key for Full Disk Encryption and erases Solid State Drives for various ThinkPad models. It is crucial to note that once the cryptographic key is reset, data recovery is impossible, and the hard drive cannot be booted or accessed. The latest version (2.00) adds support for additional ThinkPad models without any significant updates or fixes.

Support devices Hard drive with FDE

SSD (Solid State Drive)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WHAT THIS PACKAGE DOES

This package resets the Cryptographic Key of Full Disk Encryption (FDE) for
the hard drive (HDD) and erases the Solid State Drive (SSD).

Refer to marketing materials to find out what computer models support which
devices.

[I M P O R T A N T]

FDE:
The FDE makes encryption for writing data on the hard drive and decryption for
reading out data from the hard drive at the hardware level. Without a same
cryptographic key in a hard drive, the data inside can not be read properly
decoded. Once a new key is defined by reset, the previous key is deleted from
the hard drive and then the read and write operations are done with using a
new key. This means the computer can not be booted from the hard drive nor
read data in the hard drive after resetting a cryptographic key.

The hard drive with the FDE itself makes a cryptographic key and manages it,
but the ThinkPad computer does not store any cryptographic key information.
Once a new cryptographic key is defined by doing the Resetting the
Cryptographic Key, there is no way to restore the previous key, so recovery of
the hard drive data is IMPOSSIBLE.

An hard disk password will be deleted by resetting a cryptographic key.

SSD:
All the contents of the Solid State Drive will be erased in a minute, then
the password will be deleted by this software.

DETERMINING WHICH VERSION IS INSTALLED

Run Drive Erase Utility with no parameter, its version information is

displayed on the screen.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NOTES

- After the Resetting the Cryptographic Key of FDE is done, you cannot boot your
computer from the hard drive nor read data in the hard drive. The hard drive
itself makes a cryptographic key and manages it, but the ThinkPad computer
does not store any cryptographic key information. Once a new cryptographic key
is defined by doing the Resetting the Cryptographic Key, there is no way to
restore the previous key, recovery of the hard drive data is impossible.

- To use this software, the BIOS should support this software.

Make sure your ThinkPad BIOS/UEFI BIOS version is the following version or
higher:

(UEFI BIOS Build ID/Version for ThinkPad models)

8OET25WW/1.09, 8PET29WW/1.11 for Edge E120, E125
