Comparative Adjectives

We use them to compare two people, places, things or ideas


Eg. My house is bigger than yours.
Eg. This movie is more exciting than the last one.
Comparative Adjectives

We use them to compare two people, places, things or ideas


Eg. My house is bigger than yours.
Eg. This movie is more exciting than the last one.

For most one-syllable adjectives we add “er” at the end


tall → taller
small → smaller
cold → colder
hot → hotter (CVC)
big → bigger (CVC)
Comparative Adjectives

For adjectives with two syllables ending in “y”, change “y” to “ier”:
happy → happier
early → earlier
pretty → prettier

For adjectives with two syllables ending in “y”, change “y” to “ier”:
happy → happier
early → earlier
pretty → prettier

For adjectives with two or more syllables, use “more”


before the adjective:
beautiful → more beautiful
interesting → more interesting
expensive → more expensive
Intelligent → more intelligent
Structure:
We use “than” with the comparatives

Object¹ + verb to be + adjective + than + object²

Examples
Campinas is bigger than Sumaré.
Cars are more expensive than bicycles.

We use to say that something is less than other

Superlative
adjectives are used to describe the highest degree of
quality among three or more things.
Structure

For most one-syllable adjectives, add -est:


tall → tallest, small → smallest

➢ bad → worse → worst
➢ far → farther/further → farthest/furthest
