Characters:
 Narrator: in his mid/late-twenties, he’s a doctor.
 Pablo: narrator’s younger brother.
 Uncle Miguel: lived in a little village in the coast.
 Rosa: Miguel’s wife.
 Rafael: the madman living in a boat house in the beach..
 Clara: Rafael’s mother, Rosa’s sister and Rafael’s aunt.
 Manuel: Rafael’s father, he was a fisherman.
 Ricardo: Manuel’s brother, Rafael´s uncle.
 Rodrigo: the shopkeeper.
 Anita: the shopkeeper’s wife, Rafael’s love. Everyone loved her
and all men wanted to have her and marry her. She was
beautiful and clever.
 Carlos, the soldier: very good-looking, nobody knew where he
came from. He couldn’t also forget Anita

Highlights

Rafael was born in a village, he was an only child, good-looking,


healthy and strong. His father was killed by sharks when he was 8
years old, he saw everything. After his dad dies, he lives with his
mum at the end of the village. His uncle, Ricardo, helped Rafael and
his mum.
After a few years, Rafael became older and became a fisherman, he
was a good fisherman but he had always hated sharks so from time to
time he gathered some pieces of meat and went deep in the sea to
feed and then kill sharks; he got happy every time he killed loads of
sharks.
So, Rafael grew up he fell in love with Anita, the shopkeeper’s
daughter. However, Anita’s dad, Rodrigo, had different plans for her;
he wanted her to marry a rich man, he didn’t want her to marry
anyone from the village. Anita ran away and her dad was never able
to speak about that, he said he had no daughter of such a name.
The soldier was said to arrive in town three months Anita left the
village. She was 16 and Rafael was 18 years old.
Carlos, the soldier’s real name, was a strange man. He lived in several
different places, Cuba and Africa. He came to the village twice a
week, he made friends, he was different from the people living there,
he was a stranger but everyone seemed to like him a lot because he
gave everyone presents. But one day, no one saw him again, so
everyone believed that she, Anita, left the village with him.
Everyone knew Rafael was in love with Anita, but, according to the
narrator’s uncle, Miguel, Rafael didn’t go mad because Anita left the
village with another man, this kind of things do not make anyone go
mad. Everyone knew that he loved her for a long time before the
soldier arrived in the village, everyone kew that because of the ring
he had in his necklace.
