INTRODUCTION
Fourteen centuries ago, Al-Israa' Wal Mi’raj, also known as
'The Night Journey,' unfolded, marking a pivotal moment
that altered the course of history. The Mi’raj, or the

EN
miraculous ascent of the Beloved Holy Prophet Muhammad
‫ ﷺ‬from Makkah to the seventh heaven via Jerusalem,
remains one of the most extraordinary events in human
history.
DE
While contemporary discussions often focus on mankind's
moon landing some 50 years ago, it is paramount to
F
remember that fourteen centuries ago, our Beloved Prophet
Muhammad ‫ ﷺ‬embarked on a journey through the
O

immeasurable dimensions of the seven heavens. He reached

Paradise and Hell and ultimately ascended to heights no
LS

one had traversed before. In the span of one night, He

conversed directly with Allah Ta’ala, accomplishing a space
journey that transcended several thousand years.
AR

Mi’raj is a miracle and a benchmark for a Muslim’s belief in

Allah Ta’ala . That, Allah Ta’ala is capable of accomplishing
anything at any moment irrespective of means and
PE

circumstances. He has absolute power. It is noteworthy that

the Mi’raj took place in a part of one night. In fact, the
spirit of Mi’raj is, above all, to make us understand that
Allah Ta’ala is able to accomplish the impossible. What
human intellect considers as difficult and impossible is, for
Allah Ta’ala, very easy.

AL ISRA WAL MI’RAJ IN THE HOLY QURAN

Holy is He who carried His Servant by night from The

Holy Mosque (in Makkah) to the farther Mosque (in

EN
Jerusalem)- whose surroundings We have blessed - that
We might show Him some of Our signs.
Indeed, He alone is All Hearing, Al-Seeing.

DE
(Holy Quran 17:1)

“Then He drew near, very near, like two bows

length or even closer.”
F
(Holy Quran 53:8)
O

“The heart believed not what he saw. Do you then

dispute with him concerning what he sees (with the
LS

eyes)? And he saw him once again by the farthest Lote-

Tree, nearby which is the Garden of Repose. At that
time the Lote-Tree was covered with that which covered
AR

it. The sight was neither dazzled nor it exceeded the

limit, and he saw of the greatest Signs of his Lord”
[Holy Quran 53:11-18]

A SHORT SUMMARY ON THE GREATEST
JOURNEY OF ALL TIME.

First, we must distinguish between the two parts of this

journey i.e. the two trips the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬made during that

EN
night: The Israa' and the Mi’raj.
Al-Israa': The trip from Mecca to Jerusalem

DE
Al-Mi'raj: The trip from Jerusalem to Heavens
On the night of Mi’raj, the Holy Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬visited
Jerusalem, encountered previous Prophets (Alayhimus
Salam), explored the Heavens, witnessed Bait-ul-Ma’moor
F
(the Heavenly Kaaba), marveled at Sidrat-ul Muntaha (a
O

magnificent tree), and finally, beheld Paradise and Hell.

This journey into infinity unfolded in a single night.

Allah's Messenger ‫ ﷺ‬was resting at his cousin sister Umme -

LS

Hani' s house (Also known as Hind-The daughter of Abu

Talib). Hazrat Jibrael (Alayhis Salaam) awakened Allah' s
Messenger ‫ ﷺ‬and informed him that Almighty Allah has
AR

conferred on him the unique honour of inviting him in His

Court. He said to him "Oh Messenger of Allah, greetings to
PE

you from Allah. He invites you tonight. I have come to fetch

you"

The Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬made ablution using a golden jug and bowl

inlaid with Emeralds, filled with the water of Kawthar that
was brought to him from Paradise. He ‫ ﷺ‬was then taken to
The Holy Ka'ba where the Angels opened his chest and
removed his heart, washing it with Zam Zam.

PEARLS OF DEEN
5
After filling it with the light of Wisdom, they put it back in
its place. They dressed Him in a robe, placing a Turban
and a Crown on His head and wrapped a belt around His
waist, all that were brought from Paradise. He ‫ ﷺ‬then

EN
mounted a heavenly steed called Buraq (a heavenly animal,
larger than a mule but smaller than a horse) to ride
through His incredible journey to the Heavens.
(Irshad p.439)

DE
On His journey from Masjid Al- Haram to Masjid Al-Aqsa,
Our Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬saw many strange and wondrous things.
Each were a group of people from His Ummah engaged in
F
events that were explained to Him by Jibrael (Alayhis
O

Salaam). Here are few:

Group of people eating putrid decayed flesh of dead

LS

animals despite having delicious food laid them. Jibrael

(Alayhis Salaam) explained they were THOSE WHO
COMMIT UNLAWFUL ACTS LIKE ADULTERY AND
AR

FORNICATION.

Group of people whose flesh was being cut by the Angels

PE

and they were ordered to eat their own flesh. When they
refused, the Angels beat them and forced them to eat it.
Jibrael (Alayhis Salaam) explained they are THOSE
WHO BACKBITE.

PEARLS OF DEEN
6
Group of people whose heads were being smashed with
rocks by the Angels. The heads kept growing back and
the Angels kept smashing them again over again. Jibrael
(Alayhis Salaam) explained, they are THOSE WHO

EN
NEGLECT PRAYERS. THOSE WHO ARE ABSENT
MINDED WHILST PRAYING AND DO NOT RAISE
THEIR HEAD COMPLETELY AFTER BOWING AND
PROSTRATING.THOSE WHO PRAY RELUCTANTLY

DE
AND SERVE THE UNBELIEVERS TYRANTS AND
THEIR OWN LOWER NATURES.

At Masjid Al- Aqsa, He ‫ ﷺ‬found all the Blessed Prophets

F
(Alayhimus Salaam) of the Past waiting for his arrival. He ‫ﷺ‬
O

led them in congregational prayer and after exchanging

salutations of peace, He ‫ ﷺ‬then ascended towards the
Heaven riding on the wing of Hazrat Jibrael (Alayhis
LS

Salaam)

After being permitted to the gates of each Heaven, He ‫ﷺ‬

AR

met Prophets from the past on each level, who exchanged

salutations and welcomed our Nabi ‫ ﷺ‬as he ascended
further. The Holy Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬met the following Prophets
PE

(Alayhimus Salaam) on each heaven.

Sayyiduna Adam (Alayhis Salaam) on the first sky.

Sayyiduna Yahya & Sayyiduna Isa(Alayhimus Salaam) on

the second sky.

Sayyiduna Yusuf (Alayhis Salaam) on the third sky.

PEARLS OF DEEN
7
Sayyiduna Idris (Alayhis Salaam) on the fourth sky.

Sayyiduna Haroon (Alayhis Salaam) on the fifth sky.

EN
Sayyiduna Mussa (Alayhis Salaam) on the sixth sky.

Sayyiduna Ibrahim (Alayhis Salaam) on the seventh sky.

DE
After the Seven Heavens, they ascended up to Sidratul
Muntaha-The Ultimate Lotus Tree of the utmost boundry.
Our Messenger said: "Behold! Its fruits were like the jars of
the Hajar (ie. A place near Al Madina) and its leaves were as
F
big as the ears of the elephants." This is where the
Messenger ‫ ﷺ‬saw countless Angels visiting Al Bait ul
O

Ma'mur (The Sacred House) and it was here that Our

Beloved ‫ ﷺ‬was given three gifts:
LS

First, the set of five prayers,

AR

Second, the last part of Surah Al Bakara,

Third, the pardon for major sins for His Ummah.

PE

No one was permitted to pass beyond Sidratul Muntaha and

Paradise. Jibrael (Alayhis Salaam) said to the Messenger ‫ﷺ‬,
"If I Ascend higher than this, I shall burn. No creature but
you may pass beyond this point."
Our Messenger ‫ ﷺ‬mounted a heavenly carpet called Raf-
Raf, ascending to Qaaba Qausain. (A place only known
to Allah Ta’ala).

PEARLS OF DEEN
8
"THEN HE DREW NEAR, VERY NEAR, LIKE
TWO BOWS LENGTH OR EVEN CLOSER."[53:8]
The journey's pinnacle occurred at Qaaba Qausain, where

EN
the Prophet drew near to Allah, engaging in profound
dialogue. The exchange concluded with divine assurances
and blessings for the Prophet's Ummah.

DE
“YOUR LORD SHALL GIVE YOU, AND YOU
SHALL BE SATISFIED." [93:5]

The Messenger ‫ ﷺ‬said to Allah;

F
“Two gifts I have brought: One is the lack of Obedience,
O

the other the multiplicity of sins and offences committed by

my Community."
Allah Ta’ala said: "In My mercy I have forgiven their lack of
LS

obedience. Through Your Intercession and in Your honour,

I have also pardoned their multiplicity of sins." [Irshad
p.453]
AR

Our Beloved ‫ ﷺ‬said: "On that night I begged my Lord for

my community (Ummah) SEVEN HUNDRED times. He,
PE

Allah Ta’ala promised Paradise and its beauty to my

community. That night, my community attained divine
pardon and grace."
[Irshad p.461]

PEARLS OF DEEN
9
The Messenger of Allah ‫ ﷺ‬then returned to Masjid-e-Aqsa
and then back to Umme Hani’s house. While returning He
noticed the scenery of the route as well as the returning
Makkan caravan, and upon reaching the city, went to sleep -
for a large portion of the night had still remained.

EN
He later offered his Fajr prayer and narrated the preceding
night's events. Some believed Him and some jeered at Him
and some cross examined Him and asked for clarifications
(Abu Jahl). Abu Jahl said to the Messenger: "Oh
DE
Muhammad, this can only be something you dreamt." To
which our Master ‫ ﷺ‬replied "No, I travelled bodily."
[Irshad p423]
F
O

Most of the non-Muslims mocked him and did not believe

him at all. They could not believe that it was possible to go
to Jerusalem and back in one night. This also proves the
LS

journey was a real one and not simply a dream. Otherwise,

they would not have mocked the Prophet if it was just simply
a dream.
AR

Some of their leaders further began to ask questions to test

Him about Baitul Muqaddas, as they had seen it in their
trips while knowing the Holy Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬did not prior to
PE

this. They asked concerning its amount of doors, arches,

etc., upon which Allah Ta’ala immediately placed the entire
construction of Baitul Muqaddas before Rasoolullah ‫ ﷺ‬.
Hence, they continuously asked Him questions about Baitul
Muqaddas while He ‫ ﷺ‬continuously answered them
correctly.
(Bukhari Sharif, Kitaabus-Salaah, Kitaabul-Ambiya, Kitaabut-Tauheed, Chapter of
Me'raaj; Muslim Sharif, Chapter of Me raaj, Shifaa Sharif, Vol. 1, Pg.185 & Tafseer
Roohul-Ma'aani, Vol. 15, Pg. 4, 10)

PEARLS OF DEEN

The Muslims on the other hand believed in Prophet
Muhammad ‫ﷺ‬. After all, he had never lied before, why
would he lie now?

Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddique (Radi Allahu Anhu) was the first

EN
to express belief and said: " You said the truth, Oh
Messenger of Allah ‫ ”ﷺ‬Thus Hazrat Abubakr (Radi
Allahu Anhu) received the title of Al Siddeeq.

DE
WHEN DID THE AL ISRA WAL MI’RAJ HAPPEN?

The miraculous event of Isra wal Mi'raj took place during a

F
challenging period in The Holy Prophet’s ‫ ﷺ‬life. While
O

residing in Makkah, He experienced a year of immense

sorrow. Within that year, He faced multiple hardships: the
loss of His beloved wife Khadija (Radi Allahu Anha ) and his
LS

uncle Abu Talib, as well as being mistreated in Ta'if.

However, Allah rewarded the Prophet's perseverance with a
remarkable gift - the extraordinary night of Isra wal Mi'raj.
AR

This teaches us that Allah always compensates Muslims for

their struggles, reminding us that "with hardship comes
ease."

Transports used on the Mi’raj Journey

Imam Alaa'ee (Rahmatullahi Alayh) states in his tafseer that

the Holy Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬rode 5 types of transport during the

EN
night of Mi’raj:
The Buraq From Makkah to Baitul-Muqaddas.

DE
Steps of Noor From Baitul-Muqaddas to the first heaven.

Wings of Angels From the 1st heaven to the 7th.

F
Wings of Hazrat Jibraeel (Alayhis Salaam) from the 7"
O

heaven until the Sidratul Muntaha.

Raf-Raf From the Sidratul Muntaha until Qaaba

LS

Qausain.
AR

Reflecting on this miraculous journey prompts

consideration: If contemporary non-Muslims can physically
explore distant planets with their technological
advancements, could Allah Azawajjal, the All-Knowing ,
PE

Master and Creator of the entire universe and all its galaxies
and planets, not been able to transport His Beloved
Messenger Muhammad ‫ ﷺ‬PHYSICALLY through the
heavens?

RAJAB
Sayyiduna Abu Huraira Radi Allah Anhu says: If
LS

someone fasts on the 27th of Rajab, he will be given the

reward of fasting for 60 months (5 years) and this is the

PE

Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (Radi Allahu Anhu) narrates

that The Beloved Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬said: ‘Indeed there is a
river in Heaven which is called 'Rajab. Its water is whiter
than milk and sweeter than honey. Whoever keeps one
